Hi Laura,
Thanks for reading & sharing your thoughts on Workaway. I'm sorry to hear that you haven't had a good experience with it. Are there any other websites like Workaway that you have tried that you like better? I'd love to hear your suggestions!

I agree with the comments above about workaway.info.

I wouldnt recommend it as a website to go abroad for most of the time, since it is not very fase, and most of the profiles dont seem authentic, genuine or good.

Probably other type of volunteer and travelling forums are better than this. I would recommend to look for another websites than workaway

In reply to Joshuah.

Hi Joshua,
Thank you for taking the time to read my article and sharing your experiences.

I'm interested to know where your five domestic Workaways were as it seems like most people want to do them in other countries ( I think it is neat that you stayed domestic).

I'm sorry to hear that you have had these bad experiences, especially with the hosts. In my 'How to be a good Workawayer' article, I really try to stress the importance of volunteering/having volunteers for the right reasons, which in my perspective is to have a cultural exchange with free food and accommodation as a nice perk to it. Unfortunately, I think many people do not share this idea since obviously both Workawayers and hosts tend to abuse the system.

I have heard that reviews can be biased/manipulated so I always encourage someone to check with Workawayers that previously worked there. I have not experienced this personally yet.

Again, thanks for taking the time to give such detailed input in the work exchange area.

I’ve done six Workaways. One abroad, five domestically. My answer is mostly no, and it depends on your definition of safety as well. The platform is filled with grifters seeking cheap labor, and burned out hosts with entitlements that are frustrated with the quality of work from teenagers out of high school. Maybe pay for workers then? The review system is a sham. Hosts try their hardest to keep things ambiguous so as to maintain an extremely powerful and unfair dynamic on volunteers, as if living and working with complete strangers on land they own isn’t dependent enough. The answer is sure, use it, recognize that it’s become a job board for cheap labor more than a cultural exchange experience. I’ve met great people, never the hosts. I’ll be honest, my attitude is quite poor and I’m very angry about my experiences. The platform and hosts posture themselves as being different due to the nature of their work, it is very much an exploitative profit and expansion driven group. What other purpose would there be for such a manipulated review system? All the work exchange sites are fast heading towards general corruption as their popularity grows. The heyday of work exchanges are definitely over. I encourage people seeking travel experiences to come up with dynamic approaches that don’t rely on censored and manipulated platforms like WWOOF, Workaway, Helpx.
