Overview

Location – Göreme

Host – Irfan

Duration: 15 days

Minimum Age – 18+

Available Spots – 2 helpers

Weekly Hours – 30 hours

Room Type – Shared dorm

Meals – Full-board

Nearest Airport – Kayseri Erkilet International Airport (ASR)

Nestled in the beautiful Gorkundere Valley, just minutes from Goreme, the ranch features a small stable of Anatolian and Arabic horses.

They offer customized horseback riding tours through the stunning valleys of Cappadocia, ranging from 1-2 hours to half-day, full-day, and even multi-day adventures.

The most popular tours include sunset rides to Red and Rose Valleys and moonlight tours during the days surrounding the full moon.

Run by Irfan and his family, who were born and raised among Goreme’s fairy chimneys, the ranch offers volunteers a taste of village life and the opportunity to explore the captivating region of Cappadocia.

In your free time, you can enjoy activities like hiking among the fairy chimneys in Love Valley, visiting the underground cities or Goreme Open Air Museum (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and tasting local Cappadocian wines.

Tasks

They are looking for two dedicated helpers: one to assist with the horses and another to help with construction, maintenance, and gardening. They are starting a seasonal vegetable garden and continuously planting new things.

They also have a delightful flock of chickens, along with five dogs and three cats. At least one person needs to stay at the farm at all times.

As a local, Irfan knows the valleys and the area very well and loves to share my horse knowledge. He truly needs help to keep up with the numerous tasks and look forward to meeting you!

Accommodation

Volunteers can stay in a shared room or choose to sleep in a tent.

Location

You can reach the ranch easily. There’s a bus station in Goreme, and Irfan can pick you up there. Alternatively, you can fly into Nevşehir Airport and catch a bus from there.

The region is well-known for its extensive network of trails, making it ideal for hiking. You can wander through the valleys, discovering hidden churches, ancient cave dwellings, and breathtaking viewpoints.

Hot air balloon rides are one of the most popular activities in Cappadocia, offering a stunning bird’s-eye view of the unique rock formations and valleys. It’s best to book your balloon ride in advance, especially during peak tourist season.

Flights usually take place at sunrise, providing an unforgettable experience as you float above the fairy chimneys and cave dwellings.

Besides hot air ballooning, Cappadocia offers a wealth of attractions. The Goreme Open Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a must-visit, featuring well-preserved rock-cut churches with beautiful frescoes.

Other notable sites include the underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymakli, where you can explore ancient subterranean complexes used by early Christians as hiding places.

For a taste of local culture, visit the town of Avanos, renowned for its pottery. You can take a pottery-making workshop or shop for unique souvenirs.

The local cuisine is another highlight, with dishes like testi kebab (a meat and vegetable stew cooked in a clay pot) and manti (Turkish dumplings) being popular specialties. Be sure to try local wines, as Cappadocia is one of Turkey’s main wine-producing regions.

Cappadocia’s climate varies greatly with the seasons. Summers can be hot, with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (95°F), while winters are cold and can be snowy.

Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, with milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Regardless of the season, pack comfortable walking shoes, as you’ll be doing a lot of exploring on foot.

For safety, always carry water and sun protection when hiking, and be cautious of uneven terrain. Respect local customs and traditions, especially when visiting religious sites.

More Information

Imagine exploring the expansive valleys of Cappadocia, known as the land of beautiful horses, just as they have been cherished for millennia: on horseback.

Uncover hidden viewpoints, ancient caves, and historical churches, immersing yourself in Cappadocia’s majestic essence.

As the sun sets, marvel at the breathtaking hues of the rocks in Red and Rose Valleys, glowing in the fading light.

When night descends upon the towering fairy chimneys, savor traditional Turkish tea or a glass of wine under the enchanting radiance of the full moon.

Come join them for an unforgettable experience on our horse ranch in the heart of Cappadocia!
The post Farm Stay Volunteering In Turkey – Help A Horse Ranch In Cappadocia first appeared on Maptrekking.

Duration: 1 month

Minimum Age – 18+

Join Tina’s farm on a well-trodden tourist trail featuring beautiful scenery, sandy beaches, and salty sea air. Experience life in our laid-back, easy-going seaside village that becomes a vibrant hub throughout the summer.

Located just a stone’s throw from the wild Atlantic Ocean, the sheep farm welcomes volunteers year-round, while our horse stables and trekking center need extra hands during the summer months.

They seek volunteers comfortable with manual farm tasks and who have good initiative. If you’re interested, get in touch! They would love to hear from people with real-life work experience who want to have a hands-on farm experience.

Tasks

Tasks on the farm vary throughout the year, but some elements remain constant, such as herding sheep for medical examinations and managing their health and general welfare.

Spring is busy with animal care, and in April, ewes begin giving birth to lambs, a rewarding and hectic time requiring monitoring and intervention.

In May and June, besides tending to the animals, they harvest peat for winter fuel—an excellent way to get exercise and fresh air.

Summer brings hand shearing, where wool is manually shorn using instruments resembling large scissors. It’s a busy time with bringing in sheep, bagging fleeces, and administering doses.

They can teach you the skills involved in shearing, although it takes time to become proficient. They are delighted to share our expertise with you.

Additionally, during summer, they run a stable that offers horse riding and trekking to tourists. It’s a lovely way to spend the summer, despite the work involved in caring for tourists and horses.

September is also an active and enjoyable time on the farm, with various tasks continuing right up to Christmas.

Accommodation

They offer an independent accommodation unit beside the farmhouse, featuring two bedrooms, a sitting room with an open fire, a toilet and shower, and a kitchen with a fridge, oven, and general kitchen appliances. This unit is right beside the seaside. They provide food, and volunteers cook for themselves.

Location

Achill Island is accessible by road, with the Michael Davitt Bridge connecting it to the mainland of County Mayo, Ireland. The nearest major city is Westport, approximately an hour’s drive away.

If you’re flying, the closest airport is Ireland West Airport Knock (NOC), about a 1.5-hour drive from Achill. A popular way is to fly into Dublin, take the airport bus to Heuston Train Station, then take the train to Westport, and finally, catch a bus from Westport to Achill.

Things to Do

Achill Island is known for its breathtaking landscapes and outdoor activities. Visit Keem Bay, a stunning beach surrounded by cliffs, perfect for swimming and picnicking. Keel Beach is another popular spot, ideal for water sports like surfing, windsurfing, and kiteboarding.

Hiking enthusiasts will enjoy the trails on Slievemore Mountain and the Achill Headland, offering panoramic views of the island and the ocean. The Atlantic Drive is a scenic route that showcases some of Achill’s most beautiful coastal scenery.

Explore the Deserted Village at Slievemore, where you can walk among the ruins of an abandoned settlement from the 19th century. Achill Island also has a rich cultural heritage, with several galleries, craft shops, and historical sites to visit, including the Achill Heritage Centre.

Food to try

Achill Island boasts a variety of dining options, from cozy pubs serving traditional Irish fare to seafood restaurants offering the freshest catches of the day.

Don’t miss the chance to try local specialties such as Achill lamb, Atlantic seafood, and freshly baked soda bread. Many pubs also feature live traditional Irish music, providing an authentic cultural experience.

Nature and Adventure

Achill Island is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers. In addition to its beautiful beaches and hiking trails, the island offers opportunities for cycling, fishing, and birdwatching. The Great Western Greenway is a 42-kilometer trail from Westport to Achill, perfect for cycling or walking through picturesque landscapes.

For water enthusiasts, Achill’s clear waters are ideal for snorkeling, diving, and kayaking. The island’s diverse marine life and underwater landscapes provide a unique experience for divers of all levels.

Travel Tips

The best time to visit Achill Island is during the summer months (June to September) when the weather is mild and suitable for outdoor activities. However, the island’s beauty can be enjoyed year-round, and visiting in the off-season means fewer crowds.

Achill Island has a mild, temperate climate, so pack layers and waterproof clothing to stay comfortable in changing weather conditions. Sturdy walking shoes are essential for exploring the island’s rugged terrain.

Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore Achill Island and the surrounding areas. While public transport is available, it may be limited, especially to more remote locations.

Local festivals and events, such as the Achill Seafood Festival and the Achill Half Marathon, provide a wonderful opportunity to experience the island’s culture and community spirit.

Achill Island is known for its friendly locals, so don’t hesitate to engage with them and ask for recommendations or directions. Respect the natural environment, stick to marked paths, and be mindful of wildlife and local conservation efforts.

More Information

No matter what time of year you choose to come, there is always activity on the farm.
Overview

Join Swaminarayan Gokuldham Nar’s “Hospital at Your Door” service, offering mobile healthcare to 32 rural villages in Gujarat, India. This service provides primary medical care, consultations, and medications at a minimal cost.

A team of four (doctor, nurse, assistant, and driver) operates the mobile clinic, visiting five villages daily to set up pop-up clinics. Volunteers are essential to maintain efficient operations and ensure continuous patient care.

Tasks

Volunteers will work with the local medical team to diagnose, offer preventive advice, and prescribe medications to village residents. Tasks include measuring blood pressure, temperature checks, assisting the local doctor, and providing primary care.

Volunteers will also help at the boarding school and care home on campus, and may participate in a monthly prosthetic limb camp. There are opportunities to develop healthcare awareness materials and teach health-related topics to students.

Accommodation

Volunteers are provided with a shared two-bedroom apartment on the Gokuldham Nar campus. Meals, featuring Swaminarayan vegetarian cuisine, are served in the communal temple, and free mineral water is available.

Location

The center is 2 hours from Ahmedabad and 30 minutes from Anand. Free transfers are provided from Ahmedabad International Airport or Anand railway station.

The best time to visit Gujarat is from November to February when the weather is cool and pleasant. Summers are extremely hot, and the monsoon season can make travel challenging.

Local transportation includes auto-rickshaws, taxis, and buses, with trains and buses being reliable for intercity travel.

In Ahmedabad, visit the Sabarmati Ashram, Jama Masjid, and Adalaj Stepwell. Gir National Park is a must-see for its Asiatic lions. The Rann of Kutch is known for its white salt desert, especially during the Rann Utsav festival.

Dwarka and Somnath are important pilgrimage sites with stunning temples, and Vadodara is home to the grand Laxmi Vilas Palace and Sayaji Gardens.

Gujarat is predominantly vegetarian, and many places observe strict vegetarianism. Respect local customs, dress modestly, and be mindful of the state’s alcohol restrictions.

Try local cuisine like Gujarati thali, dhokla, khandvi, and thepla. For shopping, explore markets in Ahmedabad, Surat, and Bhuj for textiles, handicrafts, jewelry, and traditional attire.

Stay hydrated, use insect repellent, respect local laws, and keep copies of important documents. While Gujarati is the official language, Hindi and English are widely understood, especially in urban areas.

More Information

Volunteers must commit to a minimum of four weeks, possess relevant healthcare qualifications, and be fluent in English. A video interview is required before placement.

Volunteers must dress modestly and adhere to a no smoking, no alcohol, and no drugs policy. This opportunity offers a chance to immerse in the local culture and make a significant impact in rural healthcare.
The post Medical Volunteering In India – Help Make A Healthy Impact In Rural Communities first appeared on Maptrekking.
