Volunteers are invited to join a team in Loja, a city celebrated for its art and culture.

Known for its stunning landscapes, Loja is one of the cleanest and safest cities in Ecuador, surrounded by mountains, rivers, and historic towns rich in culture. The local gastronomy is also a highlight that shouldn’t be missed.

The academy welcomes volunteers to practice English conversation with students. The main task is straightforward—engage in conversations to help students aged 12 and up improve their listening and speaking skills, with a focus on pronunciation. Students’ English levels range from beginner to advanced.

Tasks

Volunteers play a crucial role by providing students with the opportunity to practice English conversation. Students will learn about the volunteer’s culture, country, and hobbies, and in turn, share their own. Volunteers are expected to contribute 4 hours from Monday to Friday, with a flexible, rotating schedule.

Additionally, volunteers are asked to assist for 3 hours on 2 Saturdays each month. The role involves engaging in one-on-one conversations with students, with each session lasting about 10 minutes.

Accommodation

Volunteers are provided with a private room in an apartment exclusively for them, located just a block and a half from the academy. The apartment includes access to a living room, dining area, kitchen, bathroom, and shared Wi-Fi.

Location

To reach Loja, volunteers can either fly to Catamayo from the Mariscal Sucre airport in Quito, followed by a 40-minute taxi ride to Loja, which will be covered by the host.

Alternatively, they can take a bus from the terrestrial terminal in Quito, with the journey taking approximately 12 hours. The bus will arrive at the Loja terminal, where the host will be waiting to pick up the volunteers.

More Information

Loja, Ecuador, is a hidden gem in the country’s southern Andes, known for its vibrant cultural scene and stunning natural surroundings. As the “Music and Cultural Capital” of Ecuador, Loja boasts a rich artistic heritage, with music, dance, and festivals deeply ingrained in local life.

The city’s picturesque setting is framed by mountains, offering breathtaking views and numerous opportunities for outdoor activities. Parque Nacional Podocarpus, just a short drive away, is a must-visit for nature lovers, featuring diverse ecosystems, hiking trails, and rare bird species.

Loja’s colonial architecture and charming plazas invite leisurely strolls, while its museums and galleries provide insights into the region’s history and artistic traditions. The city’s cathedral, a striking example of colonial architecture, is a central landmark.

The local cuisine is a delightful experience, with traditional dishes like tamales, humitas, and the local specialty, “repe lojano,” a creamy green banana soup. Street markets and small eateries offer authentic flavors that shouldn’t be missed.

For those looking to explore further, Loja serves as a gateway to nearby towns like Vilcabamba, known for its relaxed atmosphere and reputedly long-lived residents, and Saraguro, where visitors can experience indigenous culture.

Getting around Loja is easy, with a well-organized public transport system and plenty of taxis. The city’s compact size makes it walkable, and its friendly residents are always willing to help visitors navigate.

Whether you’re drawn by the cultural richness, natural beauty, or simply the laid-back vibe, Loja offers a unique and rewarding experience for travelers seeking an authentic Ecuadorian adventure.
The post Language Exchange In Loja – Volunteer In Ecuador & Make A Difference first appeared on Maptrekking.

Location – Oloron-Sainte-Marie

Host – Shannon & Noel

Duration: 21 day

Minimum Age – 22+

Available Spots – 2 helpers

Weekly Hours – 18 hours

Room Type – Double Private

Meals – Self Catering

Nearest Airport – Lourdes Airport

Noel, an Irish widower, has been living in southwest France for two decades and loves welcoming guests from around the world.

His home, located on a ridge next to a forest with stunning views of the Pyrenees, is equipped with all modern conveniences, including a spacious kitchen, bathrooms, central heating, WiFi, laundry facilities, a dishwasher, and a coffee machine.

The property also features expansive gardens of about 2 acres and a swimming pool for summer relaxation, along with a sunny terrace for outdoor dining.

Noel is in his eighties and could use some help with daily tasks such as shopping, cooking, gardening, driving, and general housekeeping. DIY skills are a bonus, especially for tending to the trees on the property. While some French language skills would be helpful, Google Translate is a useful tool for communication.

In return for 3.5 hours of work a day, 5 days a week, guests will have their own double room with a private bathroom. All bills and food are included, though meals are only cooked when Noel’s daughter is around.

A minimum stay of three weeks is required, with the possibility of a longer stay if things work out well. A driver’s license is necessary, and having your own vehicle is preferred due to the rural location.

Smoking and pets are not allowed, but it’s important to be comfortable around Noel’s cat.

Noel’s daughter, Shannon, based in the UK, handles applications and will be present to help guests settle in. The family visits regularly, ensuring lively conversations and a warm atmosphere.

The nearest town, Oloron Ste Marie, is just 7.9km away, offering a charming blend of history and natural beauty at the foot of the Pyrenees.

Tasks

Noel needs assistance with daily tasks, including chores, cooking, gardening, driving, and some DIY projects. It would be ideal for a couple who can manage a variety of tasks, though singles are welcome too.

If you’re skilled with trees or power tools, that’s a big plus. Basic French skills or the ability to use Google Translate will be useful, as Noel’s French is limited.

In exchange for 3.5 hours of work a day, 5 days a week, guests will receive a private room with a bathroom. All bills and food are covered, though meals are only prepared when Noel’s daughter is around.

A minimum stay of three weeks is required, with the option to extend if both parties agree. A driver’s license is necessary, and having your own vehicle is preferred due to the remote location. Smoking and pets are not allowed, but being comfortable with Noel’s friendly cat is essential.

Shannon will manage applications and be available to assist guests upon arrival. Regular family visits ensure a vibrant and social environment.

Accommodation

Guests will have their own double bedroom with a private bathroom on the ground floor of the house. Since there are no other bedrooms on this level, guests can enjoy plenty of privacy.

All necessary bedding and towels will be provided, and there is direct access to the garden from this floor.

Location

The nearest train station is Oloron Ste Marie, about a 15-minute drive away. Noel is happy to pick up volunteers from the station.

Just a short drive away, Oloron Ste Marie is a picturesque town nestled at the base of the Pyrenees in southwestern France’s Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.

With a population of around 10,600, this charming town is steeped in history and culture, offering a perfect blend of heritage and natural beauty. Set at the confluence of two rivers, it’s an ideal gateway for exploring the scenic Aspe and Ossau valleys.

Oloron Ste Marie proudly holds the title of a “town of art and history,” with highlights like its medieval quarter and the Sainte-Marie Cathedral, renowned for its stunning 12th-century portal. The town is a treasure trove of leisure activities.

Nature lovers will find plenty of scenic trails for hiking, while those interested in culture can wander the heritage trail, which includes a climb up the Tour de Grède for panoramic views.

Fridays bring the local market to life, offering a chance to experience the region’s fresh produce. The town is also home to a variety of shops, including several major supermarkets, and frequently hosts events that celebrate the arts in its medieval gardens and historical sites.

Visitors to Oloron Ste Marie can immerse themselves in the local craftsmanship, savor Jurançon wine tastings, and explore nearby attractions like Pau, Lourdes, the Basque Country, and even Spain, all within an hour’s drive.

The town’s dedication to preserving its rich heritage is evident in its ancient architecture and vibrant cultural scene, offering something for everyone—from gastronomic delights to cozy accommodations and adventurous outings.

For those who enjoy cycling, the area is a haven, and the house is conveniently situated along the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela, making it a perfect stop for hikers.

Thrill-seekers can indulge in white water rafting and kayaking at a nearby center, or try their hand at fishing in the local waters. Just 14km away, Herrere aerodrome caters to flying and gliding enthusiasts.

In winter, ski resorts like Gourette, Pierre Saint Martin, and Artouste are just a 50-minute drive, offering slopes for all skill levels.

The nearest train station in Oloron Ste Marie connects you to Pau (TGV Hub) in just 40 minutes, making it easy to explore the wider region.

There are direct buses from Chiang Mai or Bangkok to Tha Ton daily. From Chiang Mai, you can take a bus from the Chang Phueak Bus Terminal, which takes about 4 hours.

From Bangkok, a bus from the Mochit Bus Terminal takes about 12 hours. While there are no direct buses from Chiang Rai, local vans can take you to Fang, from where you can catch a minibus to the ecovillage.

Chiang Mai is a city that seamlessly blends rich cultural heritage with a laid-back atmosphere, making it a must-visit destination in Thailand. Nestled in the mountainous region of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai offers a unique contrast to the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. Here, ancient temples stand alongside trendy cafes, and lush nature is just a short drive away.

The Old City of Chiang Mai is a great place to start exploring. Surrounded by remnants of ancient walls and a moat, the Old City is home to some of the city’s most famous temples, such as Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang.

The temples are not only beautiful but also offer insight into the city’s deep-rooted spiritual traditions. The Sunday Night Market on Ratchadamnoen Road is a vibrant place to experience local crafts, street food, and live performances.

Just outside the city, Doi Suthep is a must-see. The mountain is home to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of Thailand’s most revered temples, which offers breathtaking views of the city below.

The hike or drive up is rewarding, and the golden stupa at the temple’s center is stunning. For nature lovers, the surrounding Doi Suthep-Pui National Park offers trails, waterfalls, and lush greenery.

Chiang Mai is also a gateway to the countryside, where you can experience rural Thai life. You can visit elephant sanctuaries that focus on ethical treatment, where you can learn about and interact with these gentle giants.

If you’re interested in Thai cuisine, Chiang Mai is renowned for its cooking schools, where you can learn to prepare traditional dishes like Khao Soi, a delicious coconut curry noodle soup that is a local specialty.

For a bit of adventure, the surrounding area offers plenty of opportunities for trekking, zip-lining, and exploring hill tribe villages. You can take a day trip to the nearby town of Pai, known for its relaxed vibe and scenic landscapes, or explore the Chiang Rai region to see the famous White Temple.

Chiang Mai’s weather is relatively cooler than much of Thailand, especially from November to February, making it a great time to visit. If you’re there in April, brace yourself for the Songkran festival, Thailand’s famous water festival, where the entire city turns into a giant water fight.

Whether you’re looking for cultural immersion, outdoor adventure, or just a place to relax and unwind, Chiang Mai offers something for everyone.

Are you ready for an unforgettable Arctic adventure? Visit their charming farm in Lakselv, where a family deeply passionate about nature and animals resides amidst the untamed wilderness.

There’s always plenty to do on a farm, and they would love to have you join them. Your primary responsibility will be caring for their pack of Greenlandic dogs. These magnificent creatures, closely related to wolves, have wonderful and pure souls. However, they are large and strong, requiring a certain level of strength to handle.

Helping on the ranch is physically demanding, especially during the exhausting Arctic winters, when the polar night shrouds everything in darkness for three months.

Staying with them isn’t just a leisurely holiday; it involves rigorous ranch and animal work. But rest assured, the experience will be one-of-a-kind, with ample free time to enjoy life’s pleasures.

If you’re passionate about dogs, the outdoors, and eager to learn new skills while immersing yourself in the fascinating world of mushing Greenlandics, you’ll be rewarded with lifelong memories and a profound connection with their wolf-like pack.

They value honesty, outgoing personalities, a love for big dogs, and comfort with handling meat. Nestled in nature’s embrace, the farm offers plenty of outdoor activities, from biking and mountain trekking to fishing, canoeing, and swimming. They provide most of the necessary equipment free of charge.

For moments of tranquility, you can gather around a bonfire by the river or venture to the mountains for breathtaking fjord views.

In winter, darkness pervades the day, while summer brings the enchanting midnight sun. It’s crucial that you’re not afraid of dogs, as theirs are cherished members of the family, and they treasure every moment spent with them.

The majority of your experiences here will unfold outdoors. You must embrace all weather conditions, even temperatures plummeting below -20 degrees Celsius.

Tasks

Your typical day includes watering and feeding the dogs, grooming and brushing them, cleaning and maintaining the dog yard, bicycling, walking, or skiing with the dogs, mushing with the dogs, and supervising the kennel.

You may also engage in gardening during the summer months, shoveling snow in the winter, woodcutting, assisting with work in the forest, various tasks on the farm, tending to the chickens, and maintaining their coop. Some cleaning assistance in the house may also be needed.

Accommodation

You will have your own cozy hut for accommodation. Although the hut doesn’t have a water connection, toilets and showers are conveniently located just a few meters away.

Despite this, the hut itself is modern, tidy, and features a 120 cm wide bed suitable for either a solo traveler or a couple.

Working hours typically range from 3 to 5 hours per day, with weekends off for relaxation. However, you’re welcome to join in on their private activities if you’re interested.

Given their rural location, there are ample opportunities for hiking and immersing yourself in the breathtaking natural surroundings.

Food will be provided for you, but due to their often long and unpredictable days, there may be occasions when you’ll need to prepare your meals independently.

Location

You have a couple of options for reaching them. You can fly directly to Lakselv, which is just a 10-minute drive from their location. Alternatively, you can fly to Alta or Ivalo, from where a bus can take you to Lakselv.

If you choose to fly to Lakselv, there are direct routes available from Oslo airport on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. On other days, you’ll need to connect through Tromsø to reach Lakselv. Once you arrive in Lakselv, they’ll be happy to pick you up.

Lakselv, a small village in Norway’s Finnmark region, is nestled in the heart of the Porsanger Peninsula. Known for its pristine natural beauty, Lakselv offers visitors a serene escape into the Arctic wilderness.

Whether you’re chasing the Northern Lights in winter or basking in the Midnight Sun during summer, Lakselv is a destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Things to Do

In Lakselv, outdoor activities abound. In the summer, hiking and biking trails wind through stunning landscapes, offering breathtaking views of fjords and mountains. The Porsanger Fjord, one of Norway’s longest and most beautiful, is ideal for fishing, canoeing, or simply enjoying the tranquil waters.

If you visit in winter, you can experience the thrill of dog sledding, snowshoeing, or skiing across snow-covered terrains. Don’t miss the chance to witness the Northern Lights, which often dance across the sky on clear winter nights.

Local Culture

Lakselv is a gateway to understanding the Sami culture, the indigenous people of Northern Europe. You can learn about their traditions, handicrafts, and way of life at local cultural centers or by joining a Sami-guided tour. The area is also known for its rich history, including World War II sites and ancient rock carvings.

Where to Stay

Accommodations in Lakselv range from cozy cabins and lodges to modern hotels. Many lodgings offer a rustic charm that complements the natural surroundings, with options to stay close to nature, whether in a forested area or by the fjord.

When To Visit

The best time to visit Lakselv depends on your interests. Summer, from June to August, is perfect for enjoying long days and mild weather, ideal for hiking, fishing, and exploring the fjords.

Winter, from December to February, is for those seeking a true Arctic experience, with the opportunity to see the Northern Lights, go dog sledding, and enjoy the snowy landscape.

Lakselv offers a unique blend of adventure, culture, and natural beauty, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring Norway’s Arctic.

More Information

They welcome creative individuals who have a passion for animals and a knack for recognizing what needs to be done. Whether you’re a crafty artisan or someone with a strong sense of independence, this is the ideal environment to unleash your creativity and contribute to their endeavors.

If you’re visiting as a couple or with friends, there may be occasions when they require assistance in different areas simultaneously. This means you should be prepared to work independently from your partner or friend when necessary.
The post Greenlandic Dog Volunteering In Norway – Have A Unique Arctic Work Exchange first appeared on Maptrekking.

Overview

Location – O’Connell, NSW

Host – Angela

Nearest Airport – Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (SYD)

In O’Connell, NSW, help with saffron harvesting for 4-6 hours daily in exchange for a room with an en-suite and meals.

Located on the Fish River in the historic hamlet of O’Connell, 2.5 hours west of Sydney, this small farm specializes in growing garlic and saffron. Despite being a small operation, the farm owners manage their regular jobs alongside farm chores.

Saffron, known as the most expensive spice globally, is a prized endeavor for them. The farm is situated in one of the few regions in Australia blessed with the perfect climate, soil, and conditions for its cultivation.

The saffron flowers are triggered by frost, typically occurring around the end of April or early May, and the harvest period spans only about 3-4 weeks in total.

In exchange for a comfortable room with its own bathroom and wholesome, fresh meals, they offer an enriching experience to individuals interested in learning about saffron cultivation.

Participants will assist with the morning harvest before moving indoors to sit around the table near the log fire, where it’s warm. Here, they will delicately remove the valuable saffron stigmas from the flowers, which will then be dried using a custom dehydrator.

The work is not physically demanding or strenuous, unlike many other forms of farm labor.

Tasks

The type of work required isn’t difficult. As long as you can crouch down to the level of the raised rows, it’s quite straightforward.

You’re not obligated to rise at the crack of dawn unless you choose to. Feel free to wake up and enjoy a leisurely, home-cooked country breakfast whenever you like.

The flowers need to be harvested promptly after they open, typically after the morning sun has kissed them. This involves walking along each row and picking the flowers, a task that’s very easy to learn with their guidance.

Once harvested, participants gather indoors around the table by the fire to delicately remove the stigmas from each flower. These prized saffron threads must be processed daily as the flowers open.

Work hours will fluctuate depending on the flowering schedule. Additionally, the number of workers and individual work pace will influence the hours required. On average, expect to work around 4 hours per day.

Accommodation

They offer a cozy room featuring a queen-sized bed, a smart TV, and an en-suite bathroom for your comfort.

Additionally, if you’re traveling with friends, they can accommodate up to four people. However, please note that the second bathroom would be shared in this case.

Location

The nearest international airport is Sydney, approximately a 3-hour drive from the farm. If you’re arriving by train, they can arrange to pick you up from Bathurst station, which is only 20 minutes away from the farm.

O’Connell, NSW, offers a serene escape with its rich history and natural beauty. Nestled on the Fish River, this small hamlet is an ideal destination for those looking to unwind in a rural setting.

The area is known for its picturesque landscapes, perfect for leisurely walks or scenic drives through the countryside. You can visit the historic O’Connell Hotel, a classic country pub that has been a central gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Nearby, you’ll find the O’Connell Heritage Village, where you can explore old buildings that give a glimpse into the region’s past. The surrounding region is dotted with farms, and if you visit during the saffron harvest season, you might witness this unique agricultural process.

The climate in O’Connell is cooler, especially in the autumn, when the area is at its most vibrant, with crisp mornings and clear, sunny days.

For those seeking outdoor activities, the nearby Abercrombie River National Park offers hiking and wildlife spotting, while the Fish River is a peaceful spot for fishing or picnicking.

If you’re interested in a day trip, the town of Bathurst, known for its motorsport history and Mount Panorama Circuit, is just a short drive away. Whether you’re there to relax or explore, O’Connell provides a tranquil retreat with the charm of rural New South Wales.
The post Saffron Farm Volunteering In Australia – Experience New South Wales By Work Exchange first appeared on Maptrekking.

Volunteers are invited to join the team in caring for animals in need, including dogs, cats, and farm animals. You’ll have the opportunity to live in a house within the shelter, surrounded by dogs, while learning about animal welfare in Greece.

The shelter operates with an open concept, with no cages, allowing dogs to roam freely in designated areas based on their compatibility.

Daily tasks include cleaning, feeding, administering medication, and monitoring the animals for signs of illness. Volunteers will interact with the dogs, play with them, take them for walks in the peaceful rural surroundings, or even visit the beach.

You’ll learn to care for dogs of all personalities with guidance and support from the shelter’s founder and local volunteers.

A typical day begins at 6:30 am with feeding, providing water, and cleaning enclosures, usually finishing around 9:30 am. Tasks may vary depending on the season and temperature, with the added bonus of experiencing beautiful sunrises and sunsets at the refuge.

Despite the large number of dogs, the team takes the time to introduce volunteers to each dog’s personality from day one. While the dogs’ energy may seem overwhelming at first, techniques are provided to help volunteers set boundaries.

Safety rules are essential due to potential accidents, but spending time with the dogs helps volunteers quickly understand and adhere to these guidelines.

In the afternoon, volunteers typically assist with feeding and cleaning again and may help take the goats out to graze, usually around 6 pm (or adjusted to 3 pm after daylight-saving time changes).

The main task with the goats is to prevent them from wandering onto roads or grazing on neighboring olive crops. Volunteers are also responsible for cleaning their own living space. If you love animals and want to form a deep connection with them, this is the perfect opportunity for you!

Volunteers also maintain their living space. The commitment is 5 days a week, with 2 days off, which can be arranged flexibly.

Accommodation

The shelter is a small operation with accommodations available only for animals and the founder. They can host a maximum of 2 volunteers in an adjacent 60-square-meter house.

The house includes a double bedroom, a single bedroom, a separate toilet, a fridge, and a washing machine.

Located in a rural, non-residential area, the sanctuary offers peace and tranquility. The 60-square-meter house also serves as the home for 6 foster cats, so expect to enjoy some cat therapy sessions during your stay.

The guesthouse intentionally lacks a TV and radio but offers reliable and free internet access. Volunteers are asked to maintain a quiet and noise-free environment.

While the dogs on-site may bark, earplugs can help minimize any disturbance. Please note that a landline with a WiFi connection is available in the volunteer house 24/7.

Location

The nearest airport to the shelter is Thessaloniki (GREECE) (SKG), just a 20-minute ride away. Airport pick-up can be arranged after communication.

Nea Kallikratia is a charming seaside town in the Halkidiki region of Greece, offering a blend of relaxation and local culture. Located about 35 kilometers from Thessaloniki, it’s a popular destination for both locals and tourists looking for a quick getaway by the sea.

The town is known for its beautiful sandy beaches with crystal-clear waters. Paralia Nea Kallikratia, the main beach, is well-organized, with plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent. The shallow waters make it ideal for families with children, while the beachfront tavernas serve delicious local seafood and traditional Greek dishes.

If you prefer a quieter spot, head to the nearby Mykoniatika Beach, which is less crowded and perfect for a more relaxed day by the sea.

Beyond the beaches, Nea Kallikratia has a lively town center with shops, cafes, and restaurants where you can experience Greek hospitality. The local market is a great place to pick up fresh produce, olive oil, and souvenirs.

Don’t miss the opportunity to try local delicacies like bougatsa (a sweet or savory pastry) and fresh fish caught that morning.

For those interested in history and culture, the area around Nea Kallikratia offers several archaeological sites and traditional villages worth exploring. The ancient city of Olynthos, known for its impressive mosaics, is just a short drive away.

Additionally, the town serves as a convenient base for day trips to other parts of Halkidiki, such as the famous Mount Athos peninsula or the scenic Sithonia region.

Whether you’re looking to unwind on the beach, explore Greek history, or indulge in local cuisine, Nea Kallikratia offers a delightful mix of experiences in a picturesque setting.

More Information

Physical fitness is required for tasks such as lifting and carrying buckets filled with feed or water during feeding times. It’s also advisable to have experience with dogs, as they roam freely in their areas and may jump on you to greet you.

No special equipment is needed. Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing and shoes for the season of their visit. In winter, conditions may be cold, wet, and muddy, while summers are hot and humid, with much time spent outdoors. Regardless of the season, sensible shoes that provide support and comfort are essential.
The post Animal Shelter Volunteering In Greece – Help With Dogs, Cats & Goats first appeared on Maptrekking.

Pair your meal with a glass of local wine for the full experience.
