What To Know About Visiting Vlore

Vlore is not only known for its scenic beauty but also its historical significance, as it played a crucial role in Albania’s path to independence in the early 20th century.

Vlora’s waterfront is adorned with palm-lined promenades, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy the sea breeze and take in panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. With its rich history and coastal allure, Vlore is one of the most popular seaside city destinations in Albania.

Nicknamed The LA Of Albania

I know I know, you might be laughing at this right now, but Vlore is jokingly called the Los Angeles of Albania. This is due to the high-end apartments, villas, and hotels that are available to rent along the beautiful coastline. The SH8 road that runs through Vlore hugging the seaside, has palm trees lining the road giving off an LA vibe. 

Gateway To The Albanian Riviera

Driving along the Albanian Riviera is one of the most popular things to do in Albania. You can drive it north to south, starting in Vlore and ending in Sarande, or vice versa. There are plenty of cute towns, ancient ruins, amazing seafood, and beautiful beaches to see. This makes Vlore a very popular place to stop before road-tripping along the Riviera.

Vlore’s Historic Significance

Vlorë holds profound historical significance for Albania’s struggle for independence. On November 28, 1912, the city played an important role in the declaration of Albania’s independence from the Ottoman Empire.

The Assembly of Vlorë, comprised of leaders and representatives from different regions of Albania, gathered in the city to make the historic proclamation of independence, officially establishing Albania as a sovereign nation.

Ismail Qemali, a prominent figure in the Albanian national movement, raised the national flag at the time, solidifying the nation’s autonomy.

Vlorë’s strategic location along the Adriatic coast and its historical role as the birthplace of Albania’s independence makes it a symbol of national pride and a site of great historical importance.

Today, the city commemorates this momentous event with various monuments and museums, preserving the legacy of Vlorë as the birthplace of the modern Albanian state.

Visit One Of The Best Beaches In Vlore!

There’s no shortage of wonderful beaches in Vlore, so there are a lot of options for you. Like any place, the beaches closer to the city will always be the busiest. If you don’t have a car or don’t want to take a taxi, Plazhi te Akademia e Marinës and Plazhi Vjetër will be the easiest to access.

Renting a car in Albania is almost always the best way to get around, especially because there are a lot of cool attractions outside of the city that you can’t miss. Whether you head north or south, there are some amazing beaches in Vlore to spend the day at.

Only 25 minutes driving out of the city is the area of Zvernec which I will go into more detail about it below, but the beach there was so beautiful! It is a little bit difficult to access because the road isn’t good, especially for low-riding rental cars, so beware of that.

This beach is small and you have to shimmy down the hill to access it, but this means there will be fewer people. So if you want to have a non-beach club day (no loud music/not crowded), it is worth a visit.

Other Fun Things To Do In Vlore

Here are a few other fun things to do in Vlore that you might not know about! There is a good mix of nature, history and swimming!

1. Visit Interesting Bunkers

Near the small, more secluded beach I spoke about earlier (in Zvernec) there are very cool bunkers nearby, just a short walk on a coastal path away. If you’ve been in Albania for a while, then you’ll know bunkers are everywhere and might not be that impressed.

These are slightly different because they are more tunnels that connect to a larger underground complex going into the side of the cliff. The tunnel entrances have been painted with some beautiful artwork on the outside. On some of the tunnels, you can go in and see military diagrams painted on the walls.

The handpainted images are of the different types of ships, submarines, and planes/jets that were used by the military at that time. It also lists below each one, certain specifications such as the weight, speed, etc. 

A bit further away, there are also these 4 bunkers more in the traditional style, above-ground, sphere-shaped concrete structures. They are decorated with some art too.

2. Narta Lagoon / Vjosë-Nartë Delta Protected Area

The Vjosa River, known as Europe’s last wild river, holds immense ecological and cultural importance. Flowing through Albania and Greece, the Vjosa is celebrated for its untouched natural beauty, biodiversity, and free-flowing character.

As one of the last undammed rivers on the continent, the Vjosa plays a crucial role in supporting diverse ecosystems and maintaining water quality. Its waters host various species of fish, including endangered ones, making it a hotspot for biodiversity.

The river is also culturally significant, as it weaves through landscapes that have been inhabited for centuries, reflecting a rich history and traditional way of life.

In recent years, the Vjosa has gained attention due to conservation efforts and the campaign to preserve its free-flowing status, emphasizing the importance of protecting such rivers as vital components of both natural ecosystems and cultural heritage.

Before the Vjosa empties into the Adriatic Sea, it has one last important ecological area, the Narta Lagoon, and the surrounding area. This is a protected area since it is a haven for special flora and fauna.

If you’re into birdwatching especially, this lagoon is great for it. Here’s a specific bird-watching point – it’s not unheard of to even see flamingos!

For those who don’t want to rent a car, you can explore with this trip to Vjosa River and Byllis Archeological site as well as a birdwatching tour to Narta – it also includes visiting nearby Salinas (saltworks), Pine Forest, Narta Dunes, and Kallenga Lagoon.

3. Zvërnec Island & St Mary’s Monastery

This is a trendy Instagram photo spot and it’s common to have professional photos done here for weddings. There is a curving wooden walkway from the mainland to Zvërnec Island, a small island situated in Narta Lagoon.

It doesn’t take long to cross, but be careful because some parts aren’t well fortified. On the island itself, you can find St Mary’s Monastery, a small medieval Byzantine place of worship with a peaceful and reverent interior. Zvërnec Island is also home to a pine forest that you can walk through.

4. Explore Llogara National Park

Llogara Pass is a breathtaking mountain pass along the Albanian Riviera, traversing the Ceraunian Mountains and offering some of Albania’s most spectacular panoramic views.

The pass is well known due to its winding road that hugs the cliffs and provides a dramatic transition from the coastal plains to a decent elevation of over 1,000 meters.

Llogara Pass is great for getting an awe-inspiring vantage point of the stunning sea below, as well as the Albanian Riviera coastline.

As you make your way to the top of the pass, you will pass through Llogara National Park. If you’d like to stop you can see the encompasses the dense forests, diverse flora and fauna, and walk on the hiking trails.

5. Go Paragliding

If you’re into adventure sports, you have to do paragliding! This is a very popular activity because the geographical location of Llogara makes it good for it. Driving the pass is great, but paragliding will give you a completely difference experience and tons of adrenaline!

It’s tandem paragliding, so you don’t have to worry about flying anything – no skill is required because the pilot will do everything. There are a few companies to do it, check them out here and here. 

6. Hiking On The Karaburun Penninsula

Karaburun Peninsula, located along the Albanian coastline, is a pristine and rugged stretch of land that juts out into the Adriatic Sea. Known for its untouched natural beauty, Karaburun is a haven for outdoor lovers.

The peninsula is characterized by steep cliffs, hidden coves, and crystal-clear water. The coastal landscape is complemented by dense forests and a variety of flora and fauna, adding to the area’s ecological significance.

You can explore Karaburun’s hiking trails, discover secluded beaches, and enjoy panoramic views of the Adriatic. The peninsula is also known for its rich marine life, making it an excellent destination for diving and snorkeling.

7. Kanina Castle

Kanina Castle is another place to visit that sits atop a hill near Vlorë in southwestern Albania, The castle is better described as ruins but it has historical significance because it has been witness to centuries of shifting civilizations.

With origins dating back to the ancient Illyrians, the castle has undergone numerous renovations and reconstructions over the centuries, leaving behind quite a layered tapestry of architectural styles, including Byzantine and Ottoman influences.

Best Day Trips From Vlore

Vlore is such a great place to base yourself to explore central and south Albania. You will need to rent a car from Tirana since most of the day trips from Vlore will need it. Make sure to also check out the best day trips from Tirana if you’re thinking of basing yourself there. 

1. Boat Trips

The best thing to do in Vlore that doesn’t involve driving is to take a boat trip! Usually, these trips take all day, so you get plenty of time to see interesting cliffs, beautiful bays, and amazing beaches.

One of the most popular trips will take you alongside the Karaburun Peninsula – a massive finger-like piece of land that juts out into the sea, forming a crucial part of Vlore Bay.

2. Sazan Island

Sazan Island is Albania’s largest island! It used to be a military base, which makes sense if you look at the map to see its strategic location at the mouth of Vlore Bay. You’ll have to access Sazan Island by boat – you can combine this with a Karaburun Peninsula day trip. 

3. Day Trip From Vlore To Berat

Berat, often referred to as the “City of a Thousand Windows,” is a UNESCO World Heritage site, an hour and a half (more in summer traffic) from Vlore. It is renowned for its unique blend of Ottoman, Byzantine, and Albanian architecture.

How Do I Go From Tirana To Vlore?

Traveling from Tirana to Vlorë offers a scenic journey through Albania, heading south. The most common mode of transportation is by bus. Several bus companies operate frequent services between Tirana and Vlorë, with departures from one of Tirana’s main bus stations, often referred to as “Terminali i Autobusave të Jugut dhe Veriut”.

The journey typically takes around 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Alternatively, one can choose to drive, as there are well-maintained roads connecting the two cities and it is the most convenient way to get to Vlore.

The route by car provides the flexibility to explore points of interest along the way, such as Apollonia.

This allows for a more relaxed experience. 4+ days would be good if you want an extended holiday, especially if you’re planning to work remotely in Albania.

If you’re doing a trip around Montenegro or the Balkans, the small coastal town of Ulcinj might not be on your radar. There are other popular destinations that people will suggest instead, but Ulcinj is quite special.

Is Ulcinj worth visiting? Yes, if you have the time, I’d recommend trying to fit it into your plans. Not only is Ulcinj’s Old Town very charming, but there are so many great swimming spots to check out nearby. 

What To Know Before Visiting Ulcinj

Ulcinj is a bit different from the rest of Montenegro – I’ll explain further later. But here are some tips to visit Ulcinj at the right time of year and some other things you should know before visiting.

1. It’s A Seasonal Destination

Like most beach destinations, summer is definitely the high season for Ulcinj. There are plenty of locals that do daily life there so if you go in winter you will see people of course.

It’s just hard because most of what attracts people to Ulcinj is based on being outdoors and having good weather.

If you stop by for a short visit in the winter, it’s still nice to walk around the Old Town and visit some nearby beaches, but you probably won’t feel drawn to stay for long.

You can have a nice coffee, meal or visit the local museum, but beyond that, there aren’t many indoor activities.

2. Timing Is Important

Everyone is different but normally I prefer to not go to a destination when it’s packed to the brim – it feels like you can’t breathe.

From late July to early September, Ulcinj is very busy with international tourists but also a lot of tourists from other Balkan countries.

If you enjoy this super busy atmosphere, you could visit then but if you’re more like me, I’d recommend visiting in May, June, late September, and early October.

Ulcinj is known for music festivals, which will be the peak, but if you are going to the festival this is obviously unavoidable.

3. Views In The Old Town Are Amazing

I was really surprised at the vibes from Ulcinj Old Town – maybe because it’s just not that well-known internationally. The cobblestone streets, stone architecture, and gorgeous Adriatic sea views made me fall in love.

It is kind of connected to Ulcinj Castle so as you wander around you’ll eventually find yourself there – in a fortress that juts out into the sea. Since it is built up as a fortress, you’ll see the sea cliffs below that it is set up, plus you get an elevated view of the surrounding area.

4. Some Great Hostels To Make Friends

Though Ulcinj is small there are a few hostels that you can stay at and make friends. Check out Hostel Pirate and Hostel Center.

5. Lots Of Beautiful Nature Nearby

Ulcinj has a great geographical position, which means you have a lot of beauty at your fingertips to explore. Ulcinj is great for exploring nearby beaches and countryside, but you can also do boat trips to explore the coast from a different viewpoint.

Nearby is the Buna River, a short river running from Lake Shkoder (also known as Lake Skadar) which is the boundary line between Albania and Montenegro.

There’s a little village located right before the river runs into the sea called, Ada Bojana. It’s a cute place to visit and good for having a seafood lunch. To enjoy a unique and peaceful place, drive out of Ulcinj south along the coast.

You can visit Higo Restaurant and Cafe for a coffee on a balcony in a cliffside forest. While enjoying a drink, you’ll see the beautiful blue sea through the tree canopy – it is such a gorgeous place.

If you want some more time in nature, I’d recommend going to Valdanos Bay outside of town – a little over an hour of walking to reach it.

On the way there, you’ll see lots of Olive trees, and if you prefer not to swim, you can hike up above the bay to the Vidikovac Valdanos Viewpoint.

6. Day Trips Are Possible

As I just mentioned, a boat trip is a great way to enjoy Ulcinj’s coast, but there are other options too.

If you don’t have a car, you can catch the bus that goes from Ulcinj up the coast and stops in many of the small villages along the way – usually, they go all the way to Bar, a much larger coastal city.

There may be buses that go further, but you’ll need to ask around either at the bus station or with your accommodation. If you do take a bus for a day trip, I’d recommend starting early as that’s when most buses go.

Usually, the later in the day it gets, less buses are running. Even if you don’t catch the last bus, it shouldn’t be a huge cost to get a taxi back to Ulcinj.

If you speak with your accommodation hosts, you might be able to get more information on other organized tours around Montenegro or meet friends at your hostel to all share a car rental.

7. Renting a Car

The easiest solution is to rent a car in Podgorica, so you can make your own schedule/have freedom in Ulcinj. You could drive to Lake Skadar or even Lovcen National Park.

If you want to cross the border and visit Albania on a day trip, you’ll need to make sure your rental car is allowed to cross borders, and you’ll be expected to purchase insurance to cover you while driving there.

8. There Are Even Some Nude Beaches

Yes, you heard that right! There are some nude beaches in Ulcinj, most of which are marked on Google Maps (also more along the coast up to Bar too). So make sure to check before you go so you know what you’re getting yourself into.

Speaking from experience here – I accidentally went to one when I was staying in a small village up the coast, Utjeha.

In Ulcinj, there is a local nude beach only for women called “Ladies Beach Dada”. It has sulfurous waters, a bar/cafe, and mud masks (paid), which can make for a relaxing day.

There is also a “nudist settlement” in that small river village I mentioned before, Ada Bojana. Taking advantage of this is definitely one of the more quirky things to do in Ulcinj.

9. Albanian Immersion & Friendly Locals

There is quite a lot of history surrounding the fact that Ulcinj is heavily Albanian. If you’ve visited the Balkans you know how deep and painful the history can be so I’m not going to say too much about it except what pertains to you as a traveler.

When you visit you’ll be greeted with the Albanian flag and if you listen closely, you’ll hear Albanian being spoken everywhere. Also, in Albanian, the city name is Ulqin. So if you hear two different names, that’s why – its the same place.

If you haven’t explored Albania yet, this will give you a small dose. My friend who lives there is ethnically Albanian but is Montenegrin too – she speaks both Albanian and Montenegrin.

It’s common for residents to have this dual identity. While visiting, you’ll likely get to experience Albanian hospitality.

Because of this influence, Ulcinj is a very popular vacation destination for Albanians. It’s also common for those who live in Shkoder or northern Albania in general, to come visit Ulcinj for a weekend getaway, clubbing, and to attend the music festivals.

What To Do In Ulcinj

In Ulcinj, there is history, culture, good food, outdoor activities, and relaxation by the sea. It’s also pretty low-key if you avoid the super touristy month of August or any time there are large music festivals. Here are a few cool things to do in Ulcinj while visiting.

Ulcinj Coastal Walk

If you’re a nature lover, you can’t miss this gorgeous coastal walk in Ulcinj. The walk hugs the rocky Adriatic seaside going south towards Velika Plaza and the border of Albania.

Right before the start of the walk is Higo Restaurant, which is a place I’d highly recommend because it’s an amazing place for a coffee and a view.

Velika Plaza

Velika Plaza is renowned for being the longest beach in Montenegro, stretching for approximately 13 kilometers along the Adriatic coast.

Its golden sandy shores make it an ideal destination for sunbathing and long walks. It’s also known for water sports, so if you’re into adventure travel, Ulcinj could be a great place to take advantage of this for a few days.

Ada Bojana

Ada Bojana is a unique triangular-shaped island formed by the Buna River. It is known for its nice sandy beaches and being home to some nudist beach areas. The island is famous for its seafood, and visitors can enjoy delicious fresh catches at the numerous seafood restaurants along the river.

Valdanos Bay

Can I Get A Bus From Ulcinj To Albania?

You can get a minibus (a local who drives a van for shared transport) that goes twice a day in the summer (his schedule might be different in the off-season).

Usually, the driver leaves at 6 AM and 1 PM if I remember correctly, with limited spots available. If you want to reserve a place, you should be able to talk with your accommodation to arrange it.

Another option that many people take is to share a taxi to the border, cross by foot, and then share another taxi on the Albanian side. Some drivers wait at the border. 

How Many Days Should I Spend In Ulcinj?

If you are traveling at a slow pace, I’d recommend spending 3 days in Ulcinj to take advantage of the surrounding nature and outdoor activities. If you are on a tight schedule, you could do a day trip to Ulcinj or stay 1-2 nights. 

When is the best time to visit Ulcinj?

When compared with everything else that Albania has to offer, Tirana just doesn’t stack up. It’s always crowded, noisy, and incredibly hot in the summer, which is when most travelers come to visit.

Spending a short time learning about Albania’s past from the museums will help you to appreciate why things are the way they are.

Beyond that, I’d encourage you to leave and experience Albania’s historically rich sites and natural wonders (like the gorgeous Lumi i Shales).

Reading this, you might be thinking how cynical this viewpoint is. I want to emphasize that it’s not necessarily that Tirana is the worst place in the world – there are definitely some great things, read the following section!

It’s more about the fact that Tirana doesn’t do Albania justice. There are so many amazing places and delicious foods to try.

Only spending time in the capital (or a majority of your time) would do you a great disservice. Let me explain a bit more about this in these 5 reasons why Tirana is not worth visiting below.

Interesting Things To Do Elsewhere

For Albanians, Tirana has become a place for growth and opportunity. It’s where they can move to and have the chance of getting a better job or education.

From what many Albanians have told me, most don’t really enjoy Tirana but it’s a necessity to have a better life.

And for Albanians that live in other places, they don’t make it seem like they enjoy visiting because it’s noisy, expensive, and has bad traffic.

Since Tirana has a large population of young people, there is a big student vibe to the city.

Tirana has expanded a lot, with lots of building projects going on like large shopping centers, which is not something you can find anywhere else in Albania.

If you’re looking for interesting things to do as a tourist, it’s a little barren besides museums. Unless of course, you’re specifically looking to shop or hit up a nightclub.

Comparatively, Albania has really fun things to do elsewhere.

For starters, you can go white water rafting, canyoning, horse riding, ATV riding, go on beautiful boat and ferry trips, visit waterfalls, and even some hot springs (they’re better described as warm though). More info on activities in Albania here.

Of course, there are also historical UNESCO sites to see, beautiful beaches and lakes to swim in, and tons of amazing foods to try.

Local Immersion

If you’re looking to be immersed in local life in Tirana, it can be a bit difficult, like any large city. Like I mentioned before, Tirana has attracted young people from all over the country, so it has a different atmosphere.

Many other places, like Shkoder in the north, have pride in being from their city/area, whereas Tirana has kind of grown beyond that from the city’s modernization.

There are some areas that retain that feeling of local life, so it’s not completely impossible though.

Albanian Culture

If you’re wanting to experience traditional Albanian culture, it’s best to leave the more modern city of Tirana. The truth of it is that Tirana does not represent Albania by any means.

Most of the country is more rural and traditional. Seeing smaller, historic places like Shkoder, Berat, Gjirokaster, and Korca will help to immerse you in Albanian culture.

The Best Albanian Cuisine

If you’re looking to do a deep dive into Albanian cuisine, you’ll need to see other places beyond Tirana.

While you can still get some decent food in Tirana (in fact it’s great if you want international food), it will be better to try certain aspects of Albanian food in places that are known for it.

As an example, seafood from the coast and lakes (like Lake Shkodra) is amazing.  You can also get Tave Kosi, one of Albania’s more famous dishes, in Elbasan where it is thought to have originated (and many claim that it also tastes the best).

Shkoder is known for Tave Krapi, Lushnje is known for having the best byrek, Gjirokaster is known for amazing qofte, and Berat is known for its wine. There are plenty more, but those are some top examples that come to mind.

Affordability

Like any capital city, Tirana is more expensive than the rest of the country by far. If you’re looking to explore on a budget, visiting other places will definitely be cheaper.

There are some exceptions, like traveling around the Albanian Riviera – that will be expensive. Generally, things will be more affordable though if you get out of Tirana.

As I mentioned before, Tirana has some incredible museums that have preserved artifacts and display the country’s history.

Why is Tirana worth visiting?

There are also lots of places to enjoy the nightlife, shopping, and international cuisine. It’s also the main transport hub for Albania, so it’s a great place to start if you’re traveling by bus.

Plus, if any emergencies arise, Tirana has the best medical care.

Learning About History

Albania has lots and lots of history, so much so that it can feel overwhelming. Due to varying factors, many historical treasures in Albania were not preserved very well.

Even now, it can be hard to find information, and if you visit historical sites you will see them unfortunately still being neglected.

In this way, the information provided in Tirana’s museums is pretty important since they are the main way to learn.

Nightlife & Clubbing

One thing that Tirana has compared with the rest of Albania is a lot of nightlife. If you’re more into clubbing than hiking, Tirana is definitely worth visiting.

There are some neat bars to check out, some of the most popular being in the Blloku neighborhood. During the summer, Saranda is also known for its nightlife, but it’s entirely seasonal.

You can expect to find Tirana’s nightlife to be active at all points of the year.

International Food Scene

As someone who is living in Albania and eats Albanian food 99% of the time when going out, it can be nice to have international food every once in a while.

If you have an urge for some Asian cuisine, like sushi, Tirana is worth visiting. There are a few other places in Albania that offer different kinds of food, but the quality will undoubtedly be the best in the capital.

A lot of this has to do with importing the specialized ingredients, not necessarily how skilled the chefs are.

Main Transport Hub

Visiting Tirana is also great because you have access to Albania’s main transport hub – the Tirana bus station.

Though it’s not the most convenient since it’s quite far from the city center, it’s still the easiest place to get your trip started.

From there, you can find all the accessible routes that are offered. As an example, if you tried to travel from Saranda to Pogradec, it would be complicated. From Tirana, buses leave more frequently and reliably. 

Tirana is also the best place to rent a car in Albania. There are a lot of good deals to check out, especially at Tirana airport.

If you’re looking to do an Albanian road trip, then this will be the easiest place to land and get a car straight away.

Shopping / Large Purchases

This might not really apply if you’re only visiting for a short time like a week or so, but Tirana is undoubtedly the best place to shop in Albania.

Not only will you have a lot of options, but the product quality will be higher. As someone who lives in Albania, this is one of the main reasons I go to Tirana.

The new Toptani Mall is located in the city center, it’s pretty nicely designed and even has a cool glass elevator.

Health Needs

Visiting Tirana is a good idea if any health-related issues come up. The capital has the best medical care in the country. There are plenty of great private facilities that you can visit if the need arises.

Of course, that’s not to say there aren’t good health providers in other parts of the country, but as a foreigner, it can be difficult with a potential language barrier. 

Depending on where you are, an emergency response could be delayed because a lot of Albania is remote. In Tirana, you wouldn’t have that issue.

So if that is a concern for you, it could be better to stick to more populated areas. As an example, on my first trip to Albania, I hiked solo for one week in northern Albania.

Physically and mentally I was capable, but attempting that could be dangerous if you have certain medical conditions or needs since it was quite remote.

How long should I spend in Tirana Albania?

As you plan your itinerary for Albania, a common question arises: “How long should I spend in Tirana?”.

I recommended spending 1-2 days in the city. This timeframe allows you to visit the iconic Skanderbeg Square, home to the National History Museum and the striking Et’hem Bey Mosque.

You can also spend time in the Blloku neighborhood, where you can find cute cafes, boutiques, and the former residence of Albania’s communist leader, Enver Hoxha.

Visiting Tirana’s museums, such as the Bunk’Art Museum and the House of Leaves, requires additional time to appreciate the depth of their exhibits.

These museums will provide valuable insights into Albania’s past and present.

Places To Visit Nearby Tirana Albania

Tirana’s central location makes it an ideal base for exploring nearby attractions. If you have additional time, consider allocating a day or two for day trips from Tirana.

For example, you can visit the picturesque town of Kruja Albania, located just 32 kilometers north of Tirana.

Explore the medieval fortress, immerse yourself in the local bazaar, and learn about Albania’s national hero, Skanderbeg, at the Skanderbeg Museum. 

For nature enthusiasts, I would recommend you visit the Dajti Mountain National Park nearby. Take the Dajti Ekspres cable car to the summit, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Tirana.

A great option if you’re not afraid of heights. The restaurant at the top is not a place I’d recommend, one of the worst meals I’ve had in Albania.

I’d suggest bringing snacks instead. There are also some outdoor activities, such as caving or cycling to take part in – hiking to Pellumbas Cave and Erzeni Canyon and biking to Dajti.

Is Tirana cheap?

Is Tirana cheap? Many travel blogs suggest visiting Tirana because it’s labeled as cheap.

Though it might be affordable for those who make money in stronger currencies, locals struggle to compete with rising prices.

Affordability For Tourists

Tirana offers a budget-friendly experience for many travelers that come from Western countries with higher salaries.

It is cheaper when compared to other European capitals. Since Albania has seen a tourism boom, the prices in Albania’s capital have gone up tremendously.

It’s not the ultra-affordable destination that many blogs make it out to be. Tirana will still be much cheaper than the likes of Oslo, Munich, Edinburgh, etc. 

There are some great hostels in Tirana to choose from, as well as guesthouses and mid-range hotels, providing a variety of choices to suit different budgets. 

Transportation within the city is also relatively inexpensive. It’s 40 lek for a bus ride, which is a great price but it’s very hard to tell which buses go where.

This is tough especially if your Albanian isn’t very good, because you need to ask the bus driver where it’s going.

If you see a young person, chances are high that they know at least a little English so they can help. 

Taxis are another convenient option, and while they may be slightly pricier, they are still affordable compared to other major cities.

There are even some online apps like Patoko (similar to Uber) that have started so that will make taxis easier as well. 

Generally, Tirana isn’t very large so most tourist sites are walkable. Unfortunately, the bus station is far out of the center so you will need transport to access it.

Affordability For Locals

While Tirana may offer a relatively inexpensive experience for tourists, the story is different for the locals.

The cost of living in Tirana has been rising steadily in recent years, fueled by economic growth and increased demand.

Prices for essential goods and services, such as housing, groceries, and certain aspects of healthcare, have increased, making it challenging for many locals to make ends meet.

Though many travel bloggers might encourage you to visit Tirana with phrases like, “You can get such cheap Airbnbs!” – this is very damaging for the locals.

Rent prices in Tirana have surged, particularly in desirable neighborhoods, creating affordability issues for residents.

While wages have increased in some jobs, they have not kept pace with the rising costs, exacerbating the challenges faced by the local population.

The influx of tourism has led to an increase in prices in certain areas, creating gentrification.

Popular restaurants, bars, and hotels catering to tourists often have higher price tags, making them less accessible to locals on the standard Albanian income wage.

This widening disparity in affordability can sometimes create a sense of exclusion for locals in their own city. As a visitor, these issues don’t necessarily touch you, but it’s important to be aware of them.

It’s crucial to not label a city as ‘cheap’ when that is definitely not the case for everyone.

To be a more conscious, responsible traveler, I’d encourage you to visit other places in Albania to help combat some of these issues and put your tourism money where it can do a lot of good.

Is Tirana Safe?

Safety is a significant consideration for travelers when choosing a destination and Tirana is no exception.

As the city continues to attract tourists, it’s important to address the question: Is Tirana safe?

Yes, in my experience of visiting many times, Tirana is very safe. Most people are honest and treat foreigners with the utmost kindness – Albanian hospitality is unmatched.

Tirana is generally considered a safe city for tourists. Like any urban area, it is essential to take basic precautions and remain aware of your surroundings.

The city has a visible police presence, especially in popular tourist areas, which helps maintain a sense of security.

Violent crime rates in Tirana are relatively low, and most visitors can explore the city without major safety concerns. 

Albania has made significant progress in terms of political and social stability in recent years. In the early 2000s, violence was way more likely at protests but that has mostly changed for the better.

However, it’s always a good idea to stay informed about current events and be mindful of any potential protests or demonstrations that may occur.

There are protests that happen frequently, so it’s best to avoid these when possible. If you sign up to the US Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), the US embassy in Tirana will send email updates for safety updates.

There is always a chance of theft and pickpocketing anywhere you go, particularly in crowded areas or on public transportation (the intercity buses can get very crowded).

I’ve always felt very safe while visiting Tirana though, which is a nice change compared with many other European capitals I visited.

It’s also much safer than living in the US, Ireland, and Scotland – all places I’ve lived for long periods.

I’d still recommend using common sense and being a little careful, though it’s not something to be concerned about at all.

Though it’s remote, one place that you can’t miss in northern Albania is Lumi i Shales – a beautiful river in the Albanian Alps.

Some of the best day trips from Tirana are closer and more accessible, like going to Mount Dajti, exploring ancient Kruja or Shkoder, or the UNESCO heritage town, Berat.

It’s possible to take public transport for these that I listed, though doing an organized tour will save some hassle.

If you’re staying in the city center, you will need to take the bus or a taxi to get to the bus station on the outskirts of the city. In many places, this wouldn’t be an issue, but Tirana is known for lots of traffic delays.

It’s possible to waste a lot of the day just trying to get in and out from the bus station and of course the bus to whichever place you’re going.

Tirana, the capital city of Albania, is located close to the Adriatic Sea with Ddajti mountain on the opposite side.

The modern city of Tirana was started around 400 years ago with 4 buildings built in 1614 by Sulejman Pasha Bargjini.

The population has been expanding each year, currently with 6-700,000 people. Though Albania’s capital has grown with new attractions, it’s nice to get out of the city and see the gorgeous countryside.

These destinations are really cool so let’s talk about why they’re worth visiting. Here are the 4 most popular day trips from Tirana Albania.

Kruja Day Tour From Tirana

Located only 38km from Tirana, Kruja Albania is a small quaint town with lots of history. Its biggest and most impressive landmark is the amazing Kruja castle.

This charming town, nestled into the mountainside, was one ruled by Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg (1405-1468), a national hero who fought against the Ottoman Empire.

Kruja is a great place to explore if you only have a short time to visit Albania because it’s close to Tirana. It is still far enough away for you to relax and have nice views of nature.

If you’re planning to visit, hold off getting souvenirs in Tirana. Kruja is a great place to spend some time shopping for traditional souvenirs.

Tirana is better for buying newer items like clothing or accessories – there are also great thrifting stores too.

To visit, you can easily take a bus or taxi from Tirana. There is also an organized day trip to both Kruje and Sari Salltik Cave.

Half Or Full Day Trip To Dajti Mountain

Another popular day trip from Tirana is to the nearby Dajti Mountain. It’s a beautiful area and worth exploring, especially because there’s a hanging cable car that you can take to the top.

Of course, you could also hike but there are way better places to hike in Albania, like the village of Theth. To be honest, the top of the mountain isn’t very exciting, taking the cable car is the best part.

The views are nice but the rest of the ‘activities’ at the top are not anything to write home about – this is why I said it’s a half-day tour.

You should bring your own picnic lunch or snacks because I wouldn’t recommend the restaurant at the top.

Usually, I try to look at the bright side of a situation but genuinely it was the worst place I’ve eaten at in Albania.

Plus, it’s way overpriced. Depending on your budget and how you want to get to Dajti will determine how long it will be.

The cable car entrance is only 5.5km from the center of Tirana. If you take the public bus, it will be significantly longer to get to the cable car entrance, especially if there is traffic.

Still good if you don’t mind it taking a while. You can also take a taxi, which shouldn’t be too much if you split with friends or other travelers.

If you want to get two birds with one stone, you can do a city tour of Tirana that includes going to Dajti.

There are also other cool ways to see the area like hiking to Pellumbas Cave and Erzeni Canyon or biking to Dajti.

Gamti Mountain & Lake Bovilla

Located about 20km north of Tirana, Lake Bovilla is a convenient day trip from Tirana for anyone who loves nature.

The lake is actually a reservoir so it also goes by the name Bovilla Reservoir. It’s also known for its gorgeous blue color, though many edited photos exaggerate the color.

Regardless, it is a great area to visit. Gamti mountain is close by and it’s great for getting beautiful views of the lake.

You can reach this area by driving, it takes about 1 hour from Tirana, though it could be more if there’s a lot of traffic. If you’re not wanting to drive, you can take a guided day trip to Lake Bovilla.

Tirana To Berat Day Trip

Located 100km south of the capital, Berat is a popular day trip from Tirana, especially because there are many daily buses.

Berat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been called the ‘town of a thousand windows.’

It’s known for its well-preserved traditional architecture, with narrow cobblestone streets and stone houses that are painted in bright colors.

The town has a population of around 30,000 people, some of who still live within its medieval fortifications.

Evidence of inhabitation has been found as old as the 7th century BC but more extensive development happened in the 4th century BC.

If you want to learn more, try this history-focused day trip to Berat. The surrounding area of Berat is also known for its wine production.

There are some great wineries to visit and have tastings at. If you want to take advantage of this, there’s an organized day trip to Berat focused on food + wine tasting all included in the price.

If you’re looking for outdoor adventure, Berat is definitely the right place. It’s known for its waterfalls, lakes, and beautiful canyons.

These things usually aren’t included in organized day trips from Tirana, so you’d need to rent a car to access these (or take a direct tour leaving from Berat).

Historial Tirana Day Trips

For all those history lovers, there are some great day trips from Tirana, packed with both ancient and modern things. Here are 3 great historical Tirana day trips.

Shkoder Day Trip

About 100km north of Tirana, Shkoder sits at the seat of Shkodër County and acts as the gateway to exploring the Albanian Alps, also known as the Accursed Mountains.

It’s also been named Albania’s ancient city due to its long history that goes back thousands of years. It’s one of the oldest cities in the Balkans, with inhabitation going as far back as Bronze Age times.

Over its long history, it has been controlled by many different empires including Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans.

One of the most prominent landmarks is Rozafa Castle which offers 360 views of Shkoder city, Lake Shkodra, the three rivers of Shkodra, and the Albanian Alps.

If you have time, I’d recommend a longer visit to northern Albania so you can visit more of the mountains. One of the best places is Lumi i Shales, an icey cold river with an intense blue color. It’s often called the Thailand of Albania!

You can also visit the wonderful Marubi National Museum of Photography, the Venetian Mask Museum and Mesi Bridge – a gorgeous bridge from the Ottoman era.

It’s possible to take the bus from Tirana as they run frequently, but it could be hard to see all the sites since they are a bit spread out.

Once you’re at Shkoder, renting a bicycle or taxi is a good option. There’s also an organized day trip from Tirana to Shkoder in case you’re not a fan of cycling in the Balkan summer heat.

Albania Bunker Day Tour

The bunkers are a reminder of the country’s history under the communist regime, led by Enver Hoxha. The dictator had the bunkers built to protect Albania from his perceived threat of invasion.

While most have been left abandoned or turned into travel accommodations (there’s even one near Shkoder that has a tattoo parlor inside), there are thousands in Albania estimated at more than 173,000.

The best way to see these structures is on foot, but many are in remote locations. The best way is to travel by car to get to them. Of course, you could rent a car in Tirana (there are some great car rental deals at Tirana airport).

In this case, it could be good to do a Bunker day tour – mostly so you have a knowledgeable guide that knows the locations, but also the intriguing history behind these structures.

Day Trip To Apollonia 

Apollonia was a colony in Illyria, located on the west coast of modern Albania. The city was founded in the 6th century BC by settlers from Corinth and Corfu under the command of Phalas and Leon, two Corinthians.

If you’re interested in ancient history, this is a must-visit place. The  Apolonia Archaeological Park is about 120km south of Tirana.

You can take the bus from Tirana to Fier, it takes about 2 hours. Then you’ll need to hitchhike or get a taxi to the park which is 20 mins outside of the city.

You can also do an organized day trip from Tirana to Apollonia and the seaside town of Durres.

Wine & Food Day Tours From Tirana

One of my favorite things about traveling in Albania is the food and wine! It’s so nice to have such fresh fruit and vegetables, plus most things are homemade which always tastes the best.

If you want to dive into Albania’s food scene, these 3 Tirana day trips are for you.

Cape of Rodon

About 60km northwest of Tirana, the Cape of Rodon is a gorgeous area with a combination of history and nature.

This small, rocky cape sticks out into the Adriatic, just north of Durres – a coastal city with ancient ruins. While exploring, you can also check out Rodoni Castle built by the famous hero, Skanderbeg.

To access this, you’ll need to rent a car or do a day tour from Tirana. If you’re looking for wine tasting from Tirana, try the Cape of Rodon, Durres, wine tasting day trip from Tirana.

Gjirokaster Day Tour

Around 230km south of Tirana. Gjirokaster is a small historic town in southern Albania. Though the Old Town is Ottoman style, this UNESCO World Heritage Site also gives me Italian vibes in some alleys.

Checking out Gjirokaster is a must-visit place on your day trip from Tirana. Not only is the castle fascinating, but there are great views to check out as well!

For many reasons Gjirokaster can’t be missed: its cobblestoned streets are charming and the food is outstanding. It’s one of my favorite cities in all of Albania to eat in.

Plus there are great views all over the Old Town because it’s built on the mountainside. Another interesting fact is that Gjirokaster is the birthplace of the communist dictator, Enver Hoxha.

There’s lots of history so check out the cool museums too. Gjirokaster is a great combo of charm, history, good views, and great food.

Unfortunately, Gjirokaster is a bit far – a three-hour drive from Tirana. I wouldn’t suggest going via bus because it’s too far and the buses aren’t frequent enough for a day trip.

If you have rented a car and have someone else that can drive as well, it could be doable. Driving the 6 hours total yourself wouldn’t be great.

The best option is to do an organized day tour from Tirana to Gjirokaster so you can relax on the ride there and back.

Longer Day Trips From Tirana

If I’m being honest, I always find long day trips to be exhausting. Whether you take a bus, have friends with you to switch drivers, or even an organized day tour, it’s tiring to spend hours and hours on the road.

Plus, Albania’s road system’s development was greatly impacted by almost half a century of communism.

This means the roads can be poor quality and most of the country’s terrain is mountainous, making the driving more tiring.

I think there are plenty of great things closer to Tirana to see, but if you are truly set on doing a longer day trip from Tirana, here are the most popular ones.

8 Tips For Albania Travel Insurance

Are you visiting Albania for a quick vacation trip or longer for some immersion into Albanian culture?

Here are my top tips for you – a full guide on whether you need travel insurance for Albania.

1. Do You Need Travel Insurance For Albania On A Short Trip?

The short answer is yes, you definitely need travel insurance for Albania.

Anywhere you travel, insurance is a no-brainer, definitely a must-have travel essential. Albania is a very safe destination in terms of crime – don’t buy into the stereotypes.

But for the health and emergency aspects, it is a real possibility that something could happen and you’d want to be covered.

Since Albania is not in the European Union, you won’t be able to use your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card).

I’ll explain more below about the health system and emergency response. If you’re in a hurry, I’d suggest checking out SafetyWing since they offer good coverage but are still very affordable.

2. Do You Need Travel Insurance For Albania On A Longer Trip?

Recently, Albania has become a more well-known destination for digital nomads and retirees.

One reason for this is that Albania gives American passport holders a 1-year tourist visa upon arrival and they’ve also just made a digital nomad residency visa.

So it’s normal for people to stay from a month to years. If you are also interested in being in Albania for a long period, insurance plays an important role.

For the 1-year tourist visa, travel insurance for Albania is not required or mandatory, though that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get it.

When applying for many types of Albanian visas/residency permits (even the digital nomad one), it is mandatory to have insurance.

3. Emergencies In Albania

Albania went through some really atrocious things under Communism.

Even since it ended, there have been other hindrances and tragedies, like the 2019 earthquake, lack of resources during COVID, ongoing corruption, etc.

Recovery from communism has been slow so the infrastructure of Albania still needs a lot of work.

It makes sense to say the emergency response won’t be top-tier if you compare it with western countries and even other Balkan countries.

Along with the infrastructure issues, Albanians have mass emigrated away to the US, UK, and EU countries.

This has left the population low, with many being elderly. Because of this, you’ll find a majority of land in Albania to be rural.

It is normal for some remote areas to not have roads, electricity, and running water.

The solitude you can find in Albania’s stunning nature is what draws many adventurists, but of course, can be dangerous if things go wrong.

Unfortunately, for these reasons, I’d definitely recommend getting travel insurance for Albania.

4. Public Hospitals In Albania

As I just mentioned, many Albanians emigrate away for education and employment opportunities.

This contributes to public hospitals lacking enough doctors and nurses which continues to hurt the Albanian health system.

Albania has a public health system that is technically ‘free’ for citizens of Albania but funded by a tax paid by employees and employers.

I emphasize the term citizens because as I mentioned before, if you are on a resident permit you might need to use your own insurance.

Of course, like most things in Albania, this is not always carried out how it is stated online.

As an example, I was horse riding with friends in the Albanian countryside, when one person’s saddle came loose as we were galloping.

I rode in the ambulance with him and he ended up having some broken bones and bruised ribs. He was asked to show his foreign ID, they treated him, and didn’t ask for payment.

The payment wasn’t avoided purposefully by any means, it was more of the case that all three of us were foreigners and didn’t know how things worked.

Now that I’ve been in Albania for a while I understand that tourists being treated at the public hospital isn’t straightforward.

Even for Albanians, it is normal to bribe doctors and nurses for shorter wait times and better care – which is exactly why I put free health care in quotes.

So the takeaway from this – as a foreigner visiting Albania, it’s hard to tell what to expect if you try to visit the public hospital.

5. Private Care In Albania

As a foreigner, communicating at the public hospital could be difficult since English could be limited there (knowing Italian could be beneficial, many doctors are older and know that better).

If you have an Albanian friend, you could bring them with you, things will go a lot smoother.

The other option is to seek private care, which will be closer to western standards in terms of care and facilities.

In the last decade, private health care in Albania has really expanded.

Private health care will be more likely to have English-speaking staff, so that will make it easier to communicate your issue or emergency.

I’m all for immersing yourself in the local language, but when it comes to medical emergencies, it’s obvious that clear communication becomes a top priority.

Of course, since the care is private it will cost you. I doubt any place will accept insurance.

Rather you will need to pay out of pocket and then be reimbursed by your provider later.

So the long answer to whether you need travel insurance for Albania is still yes, you need it.

6. Consider All Of Your Destinations

Usually, when travelers come to Albania, they are visiting multiple countries in the Balkan region.

Of course, I would argue that you could easily spend your whole trip slow traveling in Albania since there are a lot of hidden gems to find.

But if you are planning to cross some borders, you’ll want to make sure to have the right insurance for accurate coverage.

That’s why I’d suggest a company that covers multiple countries or whole regions without charging more. This is actually why I prefer to use SafetyWing.

Top Things To Do In Shkoder Albania

There are some really fun things to do in Shkoder that I’d like to share with you as someone who lives here in “Albania’s Ancient City”.

To organize all of my tips, I’ve included what to do in Shkoder city – 12 ideas for you in the city center.

Then I separated the best things to do in Shkoder that are on the outskirts of the city in the following section.

These are a bit further out so you may need to rent a bike or car, hire a taxi, or join a tour.

There are also plenty of cool things to do in Shkoder County that you shouldn’t miss – so the last section has ideas for day trips from Shkoder and some 2 and 3-day trips as well.

In case you don’t have a lot of time, here are some of my favorite things to do in Shkoder:

• Traditional food tour in the city center (very accessible)
• Day trip to the Albanian Alps (Boge & Theth)
• Visiting Rozafa Castle at sunset
• Bike tour around the city center
• Kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding on Lake Shkodra

What To Do In Shkoder City

In case you’re wondering what to do in Shkoder city center, here are some great options if you don’t want to deal with any transport.

As long as you’re staying in the city center, these should 12 things should all be walkable things to do in Shkoder.

1. Get Your Caffeine & Cash

First things first – coffee and cash. If you are like me, and most other people, you’ll need a caffeine fix in the morning right?

Like the rest of Albania, Shkoder has SO many cute cafes – the coffee culture here is strong. And no I don’t mean Starbucks, chain restaurants aren’t really a thing in Albania (at least not yet).

These cafes are locally run and you can hardly step anywhere without being within breathing distance of a cafe.

So if you want to fit in with the locals, go to whatever place is closest and ‘nje express’ or ‘dopio express’ for a single or double espresso. Check out the easiest + most common Albanian words to know for visiting!

‘Nje’ is pronounced ‘n-ye’ the ‘ye’ should sound like you are about to say ‘yes’ but without the s.

You can also say that for getting a Cappuccino or Macchiato since it’s the same word in Albanian – just try saying it with an Italian accent (yes it does actually help).

If you want a specific recommendation, some of my favorites are La Mola, Gojë Gaditëse, or Nur. 

Now for money – Albania has a dominating cash culture.

Buying snacks, coffee, bus tickets, museum tickets, getting bread at the bakery, etc, are all relatively small expenses that you won’t be able to use cards for.

It’s important to always have cash, preferably in smaller bills because people can’t always give change or they don’t want to for such small purchases.

Even places with cards can have problems. Like the machine is temporarily not working or the power is out (that’s more frequent in the winter though).

The places you can use card are large grocery stores (not the corner shops), fancier clothing stores, and electronic stores – so basically places that frequently have larger purchases.

For free ATM withdrawals, use the Charles Schwab debit card! They reimburse ATM fees at the end of every month (available for US citizens).

2. Do A Traditional Food Tour

Since it is a huge part of traveling for me, food tours are one of my favorite activities in a new destination. Even if you’re not so crazy about history and facts, it’s still a great way to get a feel for a city and enjoy new flavors.

This traditional food tour is in a garden of a house in the Shkoder city center. It’s perfect if you want to dig a bit deeper than just what is served at restaurants. A lot of the time, what locals eat at home isn’t the same as “traditional” food that you can order at a restaurant. So this gives a unique look beyond Shkoder restaurants.

3. Visit the Marubi National Museum of Photography

Before visiting, I’d never been to a photography museum even though I like to consider myself an amateur photographer.

So this was a unique experience for me, and it gave me a lot more insight into how deep Albania’s history is, especially Shkoder.

The photos show social, cultural, and political life in Albania from 1850 to the present.

It’s one thing to learn about what happened, but images open up your mind to understand in a completely different way.

Even if you don’t usually consider yourself a museum person, since it’s visual, you might enjoy it.

It can be a somber experience since Albania’s past is filled with hardships, but it’s definitely an interesting thing to do in Shkoder while visiting.

• 350 for orphans, seniors, and people with disabilities 
• 210 lek for students and pupils aged 12-18
• Free for children under 12, war veterans, former political prisoners, paraplegic and tetraplegic individuals

4. Check Out The Mosques & Churches

Shkoder’s long past has meant that different people groups have inhabited the area. This has greatly influenced religious diversity that you can still see displayed.

Shkoder is known for its religious tolerance as well as for being the beacon of Catholicism in Albania.

As you are walking around Shkoder, I’m sure you’ll notice various religious places of worship like the Franciscan Church, the Orthodox Church, the Cathedral of Saint Stephen, the Xhamia e Parrucës, and the Grand Mosque – Ebu Bekr Mosque on the pedonale.

5. Enjoy A Nice Brunch or Lunch

There’s a good food scene to explore whether you’re wanting to try modern or traditional dishes.

To be honest, eating at restaurants is one of the best things to do in Shkoder. There are a lot of great places to eat in Shkoder for lunch, here are some of my favorites (full guide to Shkoder restaurants and Shkoder cafes/nightlife here).

Stolia Coffeehouse & Brunch serves modern and healthy brunch options and has an aesthetic interior and garden.

They serve great specialty coffees and fancy croissants so it’s a good breakfast stop. They also have air conditioning and strong wifi so it’s perfect for getting a bit of work done too.

My favorites are the Lotus latte, fresh antioxidant juice, and avocado toast.

Vila Bekteshi has a charming, traditional feel and is located near the pedonale. My favorite dish is the chicken soup and egg-lemon soup.

Many others places serve it but theirs is the best. If you pair it with a few other sides, it makes for a good, light lunch.

Cliche Bistro is both a cafe and bistro on the pedonale that has a modern Instagram feel. This is kind of the ‘cool’ place in Shkoder to go to.

They serve a good range of more modern dishes and have wifi if you want to work there.

PS – it’s the only place in Shkoder that I’ve found that has Asian style dishes (if you want that). I had the chicken noodle dish and it was good for a region that has 0 Asian influence – they even gave chopsticks.

Manifatura is a newer bar and restaurant in a nationally protected 100-year-old textile and carpet shop.

Three childhood friends renovated the historical building and opened Manifatura to pay homage to Shkoder’s historical legacy with the walls showcasing literary and cultural aspects of the city.

If you’re in the mood for some comfort food, their specialty is pizza and beer. After trying quite a few pizza places, this is my favorite in all of Shkoder city.

If you’re okay with having pork/meat, I’d suggest the ham feast pizza. You can see some photos from the renovations and menu on their website.

If you’re looking for something hearty and local, you should try Puri Restaurant. Their specialty is pilaf (cooked rice).

This is a common food for locals to get at lunchtime since it’s affordable and gives a large portion. I like their pilaf but I did venture away from the norm one time to try their soup.

I’m always on the hunt for good soup spots so I tried their broccoli soup and it was so thick, creamy, and flavorful. I would definitely recommend that too.

6. Visit Shkoder History Museum

The Shkoder History Museum was established in 1947 with donations from religious communities (the Jesuits and Franciscans) and some prominent families of Shkoder.

It was moved to its current residence in 1996, to the traditional Shkodran house of Osa Kuka.

While visiting you’ll get to take a step back in time to the Albanian Renaissance with the beautiful artwork that is displayed.

7. Go Shopping At The Flea Markets

You can visit open-air shops in different parts of the city, though there are some areas like this market and this area that have more of a market vibe.

It’s common for people to do errands earlier in the day, so you will see more activities in the morning.

This is normal for other things too – people like to buy fresh byrek and bread in the morning so the earlier you go, the fresher/more options you might have.

8. Check Out The Small Parks

Though it’s not the most exciting thing in the world, there are some interesting historical monuments in green spaces around Shkoder city.

You can see some at Shatervani and Sheshi Isa Boletini. There’s also a green space on Hasan Riza Pasha road where older locals like to hang out at. There are some nice shaded areas so people socialize there.

9. Have A Drink At A Rooftop Bar

Since Shkoder is surrounded by beautiful mountains and Lake Shkoder, it’s easy to find nice views.

One of my favorite things to do in Shkoder is watch the sunset while having a drink at one of the rooftop bars.

Some of the places that I like with a good view are the Meridian, the rooftop bar at Hotel Colosseo, and the 5th-floor rooftop bar at Hotel Chicago.

10. Enjoy Baklava

Albania has been influenced by other cultures for hundreds of years, which is why it can feel like a mix of European and Middle Eastern influences.

Due to the Ottoman occupation, baklava is now found all over Albania. It’s eaten on special occasions, like Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. It’s nice to take a break from seeing things in Shkoder to have some baklava.

Just a warning though, if you’ve had it in Middle Eastern countries (where it’s made the best in my opinion), you might be disappointed – but it is still good.

My favorite place in Shkoder is a little ways from the pedonale here, about 10 mins walking away.

11. Teatri Migjeni

Teatri Migjeni is a cultural center and performing arts establishment near the main roundabout in Shkoder.

This roundabout is listed on google maps as Sheshi Demokracia but locally known as Ish 5 herojt – Qendra e qytetit – this is also where the buses arrive in the city and leave from).

There are different types of musical and performance events that happen at the teatri or theatre in English.

If you’re wanting to find out what’s on, stop in and ask, or you could ask your accommodation host to call them.

12. Kinema Millennium

Outside of Tirana, you’ll be hard-pressed to find places to watch movies. Kinema Millennium is located in the city center, so if you’re wanting to catch a film, it is possible.

Where I grew up, the only thing to do was go to the movies so it’s not that exciting to me – but if you want to watch a movie in Albanian for a unique experience, it is possible. Tickets will have to be purchased in person.

Things To Do In Shkoder City (On The Outskirts)

Most of the popular things to do in Shkoder that are always recommended in guides are actually located on the city outskirts. I wanted to put these in their own section because they aren’t walkable, so you’ll need to rent a bike or a car, or hire a taxi.

Even with the extra effort, they are definitely worth it – the views from Rozafa Castle are incredible.

13. Venetian Mask Museum

Having a Venetian mask museum and factory in Shkoder might seem random.

It does make sense when you learn more about the city’s history, specifically the period of Venetian occupation.

It’s an interesting Shkoder attraction, to say the least. The masks are crafted beautifully and make a unique gift to take home, though it might not be the easiest to transport safely.

14. Visit Rozafa Castle

Rozafa Castle is a fortress on the edge of Shkoder, Albania. It was originally built in the 6th century and then was fortified more in the 15th century by the Venetians.

For almost three centuries, it served as an important military base for them until they lost control of Albania in 1797.

During the communist period, Rozafa Castle was turned into a museum and prison. Today, it has been declared a National Monument of Culture and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

There’s also an interesting story of how Rozafa Castle came to be, but you should wait to learn about it when you’re there in person.

If you want to visit, I’d recommend doing this guided tour of Rozafa castle because it includes some landmarks nearby and transportation.

15. Visit Shiroka & Zogaj

When visiting Shkoder, you’ll notice that the city center isn’t anywhere near the shores of Shkodra Lake.

Shiroka is kind of a second city center in some ways. It’s a small village directly on the waterside that has lots of guesthouses, hotels, and seafood restaurants.

It’s undoubtedly the best place to get seafood in Shkoder. Because of the restaurant’s proximity to the water, the seafood – or maybe I should say ‘lake food’, is super fresh.

In the high season, Shiroka is the place to be because there’s a nice walkway along the water, a place for kids to play. People usually come to have a drink or dinner and enjoy a sunset.

If you’re looking for a fun, active thing to do in Shkoder, you should rent a bike, cycle to Shiroka (or even further to Zogaj if you would like), and enjoy a nice seafood lunch.

Make sure to stop at Arbri Bar on the way to Shiroka, they make the best macchiato in Shkoder (I’m obsessed).

Of course in the dead of summer, it might be too hot, so you can take a taxi, each way will be about 500 -700 lek.

16. Go Kayaking or Stand Up Paddle Boarding

If you’re wanting to see more of Lake Shkoder while getting up close and personal, there is no better way than being directly on the water.

From Shiroka, you can do either kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding on Lake Shkodra.

I used to be a nature kayak tour guide myself for two summers. I can say with all my heart, being on the water is the best way to take in the lake’s natural beauty.

17. Visit Mesi Bridge

Mesi Bridge is a unique and picturesque landmark leftover from the Ottomans in 18th century.

You can find Ottoman bridges in different parts of Albania, but this is one of the longest in the region of northern Albania.

If you want to save time, it could be easier to take this combination tour of Mesi Bridge, Disht Castle ruins, and Rozafa Castle. It takes about 4 hours and would be good if the weather is really hot.

Walking up the steep hill to the castle is not ideal in the Balkan summer heat. Plus you don’t have to mess with arranging a taxi.

Day Trips From Shkoder

Shkoder is a great place to base yourself if you want to explore the north of Albania but don’t want to go completely into the rural areas for long periods.

That way you can enjoy the cozy vibes and amenities that the city offers while still seeing the stunning nature in the region.

18. Day Trip To Theth

One of the most famous villages in northern Albanian, Theth is a village high up in the Accursed Mountains, otherwise known as the Albanian Alps.

On my first trip to Albania, I solo hiked in these mountains for a week. It was gorgeous but also pretty intense.

If you’re not looking to be physically challenged, taking a day trip to Theth is a good option.

This allows you to see the beauty, learn about the interesting history there, see a cool waterfall, and an optional hike to the Blue Eye.

A different day trip to Theth offers to stop near Bogë to see a beautiful panoramic point and an ancient guard station as well.

19. Day Trip To Montenegro

Shkoder city is close to two border crossings into Montenegro, roughly a 30-minute drive to each. This means it’s very easy to visit Montenegro on a day trip from Shkoder.

One that goes close to Podgorica, the capital city of Montenegro, and one that goes towards the Montenegrin coast.

You can do this day trip to Montenegro that goes along the beautiful coast, but be aware the departure point is in Tirana.

Contact the company to see if they can pick you up in Shkoder if that’s where you’re staying.

Multiple Day Trips From Shkoder

If you’re wanting to spend some extra time sightseeing in Shkoder and beyond, then these multi-day trips are for you.

It’s a nice middle ground between going solely on day trips or planning everything yourself (which can be hard sometimes if you don’t speak Albanian).

By doing an organized multi-day trip, you can fully enjoy rather than worrying about arranging anything.

20. Three-Day Trip To Theth

Spending only a day in the village of Theth isn’t enough, especially because it is remote so a lot of time is spent on the road.

Those curvy, steep roads tire you out too – it is better to stay overnight. Trust me it is so beautiful and charming.

You will want to stay longer since there’s a lot of natural beauty to explore. So if you have the time, there is a three-day tour to Theth.

21. 3 Day Trip To Theth, Valbona, Komani Lake & Shala River

Komani Lake is also a great thing to see in Shkoder county. It’s similar to Theth though because it is remote and really can’t be missed since it’s breathtaking.

That’s why tours usually combine this with other attractions nearby. One is the Shala River / Lumi i Shales, nicknamed Thailand of Albania because it looks so tropical.

Shala runs into Komani Lake, so you need a boat specifically going there. Check out this 3 day combination of Theth, Valbona, Shala & Koman Trip. Valbona is a beautiful mountain village that is similar to Theth since it’s only on the other side of a mountain pass from Theth.

So this is a good trip that combines mountains and a boat tour. The day trip to Shala from Shkoder is better if you’re on a budget.

But why listen to me? Now I wouldn’t say I’m a full-fledged local of Shkoder – more commonly known as ‘Shkodran(e)’, someone born and raised in Shkoder.

Previously, I visited Shkoder in 2019 and 2020, before coming back a third time in 2022.

Now I have been living in Shkoder for the last few years and plan to stay for a while. I’ve gotten to know the city well and honestly, there is a lot more than meets the eye.

Is Shkoder Worth Visiting?

Is Shkoder worth visit – it’s a small but lively city in the north of Albania that honestly deserves more attention.

When most tourists hear about Albania, it’s because of the insanely beautiful coastline, nicknamed the Albanian Riviera.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the beach just as much as anyone, if not more so, but there is so much to discover inland (if you need convincing, check out the incredible Lumi i Shales!)

Shkoder doesn’t get as much spotlight on social media as the sandy beaches, but don’t let that sway you though.

I promise you that Shkoder is worthy of your affection in its own special way.

What Is Shkoder Known For?

I have come to love not only the city center but also the fact that this city is placed in a truly unique position.

It’s located on the edge of the stunning and massive Lake Shkoder, while also residing on the edge of the Accursed Mountains, commonly known as the Albanian Alps.

In ancient times, rivers were essential for food, commerce, fortification, and more, so older cities are usually founded centered around them.

Shkoder is very special because is centered not by one, but three rivers – Drin, Buna, and Kir. It is also conveniently close to the Adriatic sea – about a 30 min drive from the beach.

If you’re like me and you love the water, especially in hot weather, there are many wonderful swimming options if you drive 20-45 mins into the mountains too.

You’ll find plenty of lakes, rivers, and waterfalls to explore and swim in. Check out my swimming recommendations in the FAQs.

There is plenty to do if you enjoy nature, especially in the warmer months. Shkoder’s nightlife scene also doesn’t disappoint.

Whether you prefer sitting in a cafe having a nice dessert, listening to live music in the stone alleyway, or sipping a cocktail while hearing local house music, there is something for everyone (check out this Shkoder cafe and nightlife guide).

8 Reasons Why You Should Visit Shkoder

So if you’re asking, is Shkoder worth visiting? Yes, there is a good vibe, great traditional food, intense history, beautiful nature, and wonderful people.

If you need more convincing about why Shkoder is worth visiting, here are 8 things you should know.

1. Everyone Uses Bikes

One of the biggest things you’ll notice when visiting Shkoder, Albania, is that so many people use bicycles.

Even during the rainy winter season, you’ll see locals riding their bikes to do errands or go to work.

They somehow manage to navigate the (sometimes) crazy traffic all while holding an umbrella. It’s honestly impressive.

For Europe, most think of cycling stereotypes and their mind goes to the Netherlands or Belgium, but the Balkans… well not so much.

Geographically it makes sense. The Balkans are an extremely mountainous region, so cycling doesn’t usually bode well.

In Shkoder’s case, it is a flat city that rests on the Mbishkodra plain so it works. It’s also one of the things that set Shkoder apart from other Albanian cities. Try cycling in Gjirokaster or Saranda and you’ll see what I mean.

2. Great Accommodation Options

There are plenty of accommodation options in Shkoder for all price ranges. There are quite a few hostels in Shkoder to choose from, usually 9-14 euros a night.

If you’re traveling with friends, you can find some reasonably priced apartments to rent.

They are 20-40 euros a night which will be cheaper since you’re splitting the costs.

If you’re wanting more traditional travel accommodation, there are some great luxurious and unique hotels in Shkoder to pick from.

3. The Pedonale Is The Place To Be

Pedonale simply means a pedestrian area in the city center. Sometimes it is called the boulevard, or for the British, it is the equivalent of the ‘high street’.

The Pedonale in Shkoder is so charming with its old-style lamp posts, stone walkways, and vibrant holiday decorations in the winter.

The main Pedonale near Ebu Bekër Mosque has a beautiful Venetian style and in recent years has become more developed.

You can find a lot of clothing boutique stores, jewelry shops, and places to buy books, wine, souvenirs, etc.

There are also some cute cafes to stop at for some dessert and coffee, and later in the evening, a few cool clubs to check out.

And I only say that because many times, when traveling, the restaurants you find in touristy areas can serve overpriced, bad-quality food that lacks authenticity.

Thankfully it’s really not like that, of course, I would still encourage you to go beyond the Pedonale to eat too. 

4. Unique Foods To Try

The most famous dish that Shkoder is known for is a delicious baked fish entree, Tavë Krapi.

The best place to eat this dish (and honestly any seafood products) is near Lake Shkoder, a village called Shiroka. The restaurants there specialize in these dishes and have the freshest fish.

Further outside of the village on the same road toward the Montenegro border is Pelikani Kaçurrel – it’s worth the longer drive I promise!

Another one of my favorite local dishes is egg-lemon soup.

Now I know what you might be thinking… it sounds like a strange combination right? For some reason, it works and is amazing.

Though it might not be recognized specifically as a Shkoder food, this soup is offered at most Shkoder restaurants as a side dish – far more than any other places I’ve lived/traveled in Albania.

5. Deep Historical Significance

As Albania’s ‘ancient city’, Shkoder is known for its deep historical significance, especially since it is one of the oldest cities in the Balkan region.

The earliest signs of civilization found are from the Bronze Age. Since then, there has been a turbulent history of invasions most notably from Roman and Ottoman forces.

Nowadays, you’ll hear Shkoder referred to as the ‘cultural capital’ of Albania. One great example of this is that it’s where many influential figures of the Albanian Renaissance originated from.

Northern Albania is also known as Gegëria, which has social and cultural differences from the rest of Albania.

When visiting, you’ll hear the Gheg dialect of Albanian being spoken, as well as even more localized words specific to the city/district of Shkoder.  Check out the easiest + most common Albanian words to know for visiting!

6. Interesting Attractions To See

The most visited attraction in Shkoder is undoubtedly Rozafa Castle, the dominating fortress that greets you on the road to the city center coming from Tirana.

Rozafa Castle is steeped in history and has a very interesting origin story to learn about when you visit (no spoilers from me sorry!).

There are beautiful panoramic views from the castle to enjoy and also a museum within the castle to learn more about the history.

Within the city, there are some really interesting museums to check out like the Shkoder History Museum and the Marubi National Museum of Photography.

Wander around freely, there are plenty of cute cafes and great restaurants to find. A not-so-typical attraction a little way outside of the city is the Venetian Mask Museum.

7. Beautiful Mosques & Churches Everywhere

Modern-day Albania is extremely tolerant of different faiths. The main religious influence is Islam, with Christianity (predominately Catholic & Orthodox) following behind it.

Here in the north of Albania, it is known for having a foothold in Catholicism, while the south is known for being more Islamic.

In the city center, you’ll get to see a mix of both beautiful mosques and churches/cathedrals.

8. Great Place For Shopping & Souvenirs

Compared with other areas of Albania, Shkoder is a decent place for shopping. For me, the only better place would be the capital, Tirana.

In fact, I would say that shopping is a big attraction for locals coming from more remote parts of the north.

If you walk the streets in the morning and middle of the day, you will see plenty of shops with goods displayed outside, giving open market vibes.

You can find lots of great, unique used/secondhand finds for a good price.

There’s also a good range of indoor stores. For brand-new clothes on a budget, you can go to DeFacto or LC Waikiki.

If you’re wanting to get some souvenirs but also be a responsible tourist, I would recommend trying to find some handmade items at the open markets/shops.

You can find wonderful hand-knit items that are traditional for mountain life.

There are some good souvenir shops, but before purchasing try to make sure the items are made nearby or at least in Albania so you are supporting the local economy.

The only other place I’ve visited in Albania that would have better souvenirs would probably be Gjirokaster.

How do I spend my day in Shkoder?

First and foremost, you have to visit Rozafa Castle! Not only is it a crucial aspect of Skoder’s history, but the 360-degree views of the city, surrounding rivers, Albanian Alps, and Lake Shkoder are incredible.

My suggestion would be to go about 1 to 2 hours before sunset, it’s so beautiful.

It’s a long walk from the city center, it’s about an hour each way, which can be too much in the summer heat. If you don’t have a car, you can take a taxi or take a bike.

I’d recommend renting a bike (if you’re able to) since that’s how the locals get around and it’s just fun.

If you rent a bike for the day, you can also cycle along the Buna River to Shiroka for some gorgeous views and a delicious lunch on the water.

If you’re wanting to stay closer to the city center, I’d recommend visiting some of the markets, museums, and cute cafes.

How long should I stay in Shkoder?

It depends on what you’re looking for. Shkoder is a great place to spend a chilled-out weekend if you know where to go and what to do (aka following my guide).

Many people only stay for a day or just the night to go hiking in the Albanian Alps the next day, but I think there’s more to be discovered if you look deeper.

It is less busy and chaotic than Tirana, so if you are wanting more of a big city feel then the capital might suit you better.

Can you drink the water in Shkoder?

Technically, yes you can drink tap water in the city of Shkoder. The water comes from the mountains, which means it’s suitable for drinking.

I say this in comparison with many coastal Albanian towns where you should buy bottled water – not because the water has bad bacteria but usually because it has been treated with chemicals too harshly.

In Shkoder, you should be aware that some older buildings might not have the best pipes, so just ask the accommodation to double-check whether it is okay.

Can you swim in Shkoder lake?

When I was volunteering in a hostel in Shkoder, many people wanted to cool down from the relentless summer heat – we would get this question a lot.

My advice would be to avoid places that have a ‘swampy’ marsh area with long grass. These areas will be more likely to have snakes.

On the road to Shiroka near the Buna River, you’ll see what I mean by marshy.

Unfortunately, these marshy places are the ones closest to the city, so walking to the swimming spots won’t really work. You will need to cycle pretty far or take a car.

You can find some places in Shiroka and further down the road toward Montenegro in the village of Zogaj.

On the other slide of the lake, close to the mountains, there are some places as well – close to Stërbeq.

Just keep in mind, some of these areas aren’t the cleanest due to trash pollution and fishing.

On the side of the lake near Stërbeq, it’s also common to see cows or other livestock in the water/on the shore since it’s an agricultural area, so the water could have an elevated level of animal feces.

Where can I swim near Shkoder?

If you plan on renting a car in Shkoder, you have a lot of swimming possibilities. One of the most popular is the closest beach in Velipoja. It’s a small resort town with a modest beachfront.

During the high season (August and July), it is packed with vacationers, but during the shoulder season, it shouldn’t be too crowded (May, June, and September).

My favorite is to go into the mountains and enjoy freshwater swimming spots.

There are many close to Shkoder, like Prekal Canyon or these restaurants on the Vau i Dejes Reservoir that have nice allotted swimming areas – Zemra Ballkanit and Sarda Restaurant.

Is Shkoder Safe?

So I’m breaking the rules here a little bit since Mrizi i Zanave Agroturizëm is technically an agritourism guesthouse rather than a hotel and it’s located in Lezhe district.

But it is very close to the border with Shkoder and honestly can’t be missed so I knew it had to be included.

Located about 40 mins drive from Shkoder, Mrizi i Zanave is an incredible combination of culinary delight and unique accommodation.

The stone villa rooms are infused with modern touches while still retaining the original traditional Albanian mountain style.

It’s well known for its full-length windows that cover a whole corner and provide stunning views of the countryside.

After living abroad in Albania for a year now, I wanted to write about Albanian hospitality as a sort of tribute, since it is a huge part of why I’m still obsessed with this Balkan country, even after all this time.

If the stunning natural beauty of Albania doesn’t make you fall in love, the hospitality sure will.

I normally hate bringing up the number of countries I’ve visited because many travelers use their number as a way to brag.

If you know about me and my site Maptrekking, you know I’m all about promoting slow travel, but for the sake of my point, I need to bring it up.

I’ve now visited 28 countries. Out of all of these, Albania has been my all-around favorite. A large part of that is due to Albanian hospitality!

1. No Ulterior Motives

One of the main things I noticed on my first trip to Albania in 2019, was that the hospitality was genuine, even pure.

What I mean by this is that there is a general feeling that something isn’t expected in return – which I find really beautiful.

Albanian hospitality is more than hospitality, it’s this level of trust. You can expect that 99% of the time a person does not wish you harm.

They don’t have an ulterior motive. Someone is doing something simply because it’s nice/the right thing.

Though I had traveled to a lot of places, even ones known for their hospitality, Albania had this raw, authentic attitude that I hadn’t encountered before.

2. Time Doesn’t Matter

Albanian hospitality isn’t something that takes years to cultivate either. I’m always impressed with how fast it works.

You could have just met an Albanian and it feels like you have gotten a friend for life.

Compared with other places I’ve lived, it can take years to develop a friendship. You might not ever be invited to someone’s house – or it can take years.

Sometimes relationships in the western world can feel almost transactional, whereas that’s not the case at all in Albania.

3. Albanian Hospitality Comes In Many Forms

Albanian hospitality could be many things, like when a taxi driver offered to hotspot me so I could use Whatsapp to text my friend who was meeting me, and no he didn’t expect anything in return.

I have asked people on the bus if they know if I’m going to the right place/getting off at the right stop, and they have literally gotten off and walked with me to make sure I get to the right place.

My Albanian friends never let me pay, even though I insist! If I go to their house, I won’t ever leave hungry.

They never make fun of me if I say an Albanian word wrong. They are always so patient to help me learn correctly – many times people will make you feel bad/laugh if you say something wrong in their language.

There is no hesitation on my part to message them if I need help.

Whether I need to find an apartment or help translating something, I know I can count on them. 

4. Always Feeling Welcome

Generally, I have always felt so welcome in Albania – in other countries, both living and traveling, not so much.

They are eager to share their way of life with me. They are proud of their traditions, and rightly so.

I have never been made to feel like I’m not allowed in Albanian culture. In fact, I’ve been named an honorary Albanian a few times now!

Being American, we don’t always have strong traditions that have been preserved for my generation since it’s a country of immigrants.

Plus, I come from an abusive family that I don’t have much contact with. This means I have never had this strong sense of pride that Albanians do.

And I also don’t have family support, which is at the center of Albanian culture. These two things, along with many others, draw me to Albania.

5. Albania’s Hospitality Promotes A Sense Of Trust

Seeing how generous and relaxed Albanians are has made me want to embody that more in my own life.

It’s to the point where I let my guard down and trust people – something that can be difficult in the western world.

Through all the places I’ve traveled, I have never let my guard down like this.

The only issue is that I get used to it, then I need to remind myself when I travel abroad to put it back up since many people do not have your best intentions at heart.

6. TikTok To National TV To Being Adopted By An Albanian Family

Most of what I’ve written here are my opinions from having lived in Albania for the past year, but I wanted to share a specific story of an evening that really touched my heart.

It all started with some of my videos about Albania on TikTok going somewhat viral. If you aren’t following me, you should!

I make travel videos showing the beauty of Albania and also jokes about living in Albania. My username is @maptrekking. 

Anyway, a journalist from Top Channel saw my videos and contacted me about doing a live interview with them on national television.

I used to be a very shy person – I’m getting better now, but there’s no way I could say no to such a cool opportunity.

The interview went well, you can watch it here.

Afterward, the journalist, Lorena, checked back in with me and told me to let her know if I’m ever in Tirana so we could meet. I thought that was sweet since she doesn’t even know me well.

A few weeks later, I come up to Tirana because I had a flight in a few days. I let her know and we set up a time to meet.

I thought we might get a coffee and chat for an hour or two so I was a little surprised at what unfolded. 

We go for a drink and immediately she is so friendly and open with me, and this is when she tells me I’m her first foreign friend – I felt so special.

And she also tells me she’d love to take me to her house after to meet her family.

Now I know some people in the western world might find this weird or unsafe, but it’s not that unusual for me since I used to live in more rural areas of the US where this isn’t weird.

And of course, I’m pretty used to Albanian culture so I know this isn’t out of the ordinary either.

As we’re walking to her place, she mentions that her family has never had any foreigners in their home.

She told me that her parents were super excited to meet me and her mom had prepared a bunch of food.

It was 10 PM so I wasn’t expecting that at all, but I didn’t have dinner that day so it worked out well.

I felt so special to be invited into their home, especially as the first foreigner and because her mom had made such an effort to welcome me – food is their love language!

As we’re getting close, Lorena mentions that since it is already late, her brother can drive me home or I can always sleep at their house.

I didn’t want to say anything because I didn’t want to be rude, but I had been thinking, “wow, it is already so late, will I need to walk home alone after this?”.

I’m not that familiar with Tirana either, so these thoughts had crossed my mind.

But of course, when you are with Albanian friends, they always take such good care of you – I should’ve known!

We get to her family’s apartment and her parents come to meet me at the door. Immediately, I felt so welcome.

As I turn the corner to the living room, I see how much food her mom has set out and it is essentially a feast.

I tell Lorena that she didn’t need to go to all this trouble for me, and she said that this is the bare minimum in Albania. This made me inwardly chuckle a little bit.

So we sit and chat, while her mom keeps telling me how hungry I look and that I need to eat more.

And of course, whenever I look away to speak with someone, her mom sneaks more food onto my plate and more juice in my glass.

You might be wondering what Lorena’s dad was doing during this…

Well, he took on the role of always trying to refill my glass with their homemade raki or wine, plus making sure I tried their honey as well.

Everything was so delicious – I wouldn’t expect anything else though. Albanian food is amazing.

We talked about many things. They had plenty of questions for me, especially her parents.

They wanted to know why I like Albania, where I had visited, how it compares with the US, and even if I had heard traditional Albanian music and learned the traditional dancing called valle.

He played some videos for me, and I jokingly told him he should sing some of the songs. Low and behold, he starts and the whole family joins in.

It was at that moment I felt so happy – to be immersed in Albanian culture, something they were so obviously proud of.

It was also witnessing such a beautiful family coming together to sing and see the joy it brought them. It felt nice to be a part of this intimate moment.

Plus, it wasn’t just normal singing, you could tell it’s something they do all the time together because it sounded great and all the voices worked in harmony.

Maybe it is very normal for them, but for me, seeing a family be like that together is very special.

Also, it reminded me of indigenous singing in North America called throat singing. I thought that was cool to see similarities.

Time passed so quickly and before I knew it, it was 2 AM!

I had been there for 4 hours. They insisted that I should stay the night but I had a flight the next day so I knew it would be best to go back home.

As we were driving to my place, I had this wonderful feeling of happiness (maybe it was all the raki) and also sadness because I had to leave the next day even though I had just met such a wonderful family. 

All of this happened the night before leaving Albania for three months to reset my visa.

It was the perfect ending to my first year of living in Albania. Thinking about it now as I write this still leaves a smile on my face.

7. There’s No Such Thing As Perfection

Of course, Albanian hospitality doesn’t erase other issues that Albania has.

Nor does it mean that every interaction will be life-changing. Like any place, there are still bad people.

Yes, sometimes I have gotten overcharged for things because I’m a foreigner. It isn’t always perfect.

But the majority of people are very nice and will help you if you think you might be getting overcharged on rent or something like that.

Albania is all about connections – as long as you know people you can always ask for their advice or help.

Experiencing Albanian hospitality has not only made my time in Albania amazing but it’s also taught me to be a better person.

I find myself shedding more of my ‘western’ tendencies and adopting a more relaxed, generous attitude.
