Is Ulcinj Worth Visiting?

If you’re doing a trip around Montenegro or the Balkans, the small coastal town of Ulcinj might not be on your radar. There are other popular destinations that people will suggest instead, but Ulcinj is quite special.

Is Ulcinj worth visiting? Yes, if you have the time, I’d recommend trying to fit it into your plans. Not only is Ulcinj’s Old Town very charming, but there are so many great swimming spots to check out nearby. 

What To Know Before Visiting Ulcinj

Ulcinj is a bit different from the rest of Montenegro – I’ll explain further later. But here are some tips to visit Ulcinj at the right time of year and some other things you should know before visiting.

1. It’s A Seasonal Destination

Like most beach destinations, summer is definitely the high season for Ulcinj. There are plenty of locals that do daily life there so if you go in winter you will see people of course.

It’s just hard because most of what attracts people to Ulcinj is based on being outdoors and having good weather.

If you stop by for a short visit in the winter, it’s still nice to walk around the Old Town and visit some nearby beaches, but you probably won’t feel drawn to stay for long.

You can have a nice coffee, meal or visit the local museum, but beyond that, there aren’t many indoor activities.

2. Timing Is Important

Everyone is different but normally I prefer to not go to a destination when it’s packed to the brim – it feels like you can’t breathe.

From late July to early September, Ulcinj is very busy with international tourists but also a lot of tourists from other Balkan countries.

If you enjoy this super busy atmosphere, you could visit then but if you’re more like me, I’d recommend visiting in May, June, late September, and early October.

Ulcinj is known for music festivals, which will be the peak, but if you are going to the festival this is obviously unavoidable.

3. Views In The Old Town Are Amazing

I was really surprised at the vibes from Ulcinj Old Town – maybe because it’s just not that well-known internationally. The cobblestone streets, stone architecture, and gorgeous Adriatic sea views made me fall in love.

It is kind of connected to Ulcinj Castle so as you wander around you’ll eventually find yourself there – in a fortress that juts out into the sea. Since it is built up as a fortress, you’ll see the sea cliffs below that it is set up, plus you get an elevated view of the surrounding area.

4. Some Great Hostels To Make Friends

Though Ulcinj is small there are a few hostels that you can stay at and make friends. Check out Hostel Pirate and Hostel Center.

5. Lots Of Beautiful Nature Nearby

Ulcinj has a great geographical position, which means you have a lot of beauty at your fingertips to explore. Ulcinj is great for exploring nearby beaches and countryside, but you can also do boat trips to explore the coast from a different viewpoint.

Nearby is the Buna River, a short river running from Lake Shkoder (also known as Lake Skadar) which is the boundary line between Albania and Montenegro.

There’s a little village located right before the river runs into the sea called, Ada Bojana. It’s a cute place to visit and good for having a seafood lunch. To enjoy a unique and peaceful place, drive out of Ulcinj south along the coast.

You can visit Higo Restaurant and Cafe for a coffee on a balcony in a cliffside forest. While enjoying a drink, you’ll see the beautiful blue sea through the tree canopy – it is such a gorgeous place.

If you want some more time in nature, I’d recommend going to Valdanos Bay outside of town – a little over an hour of walking to reach it.

On the way there, you’ll see lots of Olive trees, and if you prefer not to swim, you can hike up above the bay to the Vidikovac Valdanos Viewpoint.

6. Day Trips Are Possible

As I just mentioned, a boat trip is a great way to enjoy Ulcinj’s coast, but there are other options too.

If you don’t have a car, you can catch the bus that goes from Ulcinj up the coast and stops in many of the small villages along the way – usually, they go all the way to Bar, a much larger coastal city.

There may be buses that go further, but you’ll need to ask around either at the bus station or with your accommodation. If you do take a bus for a day trip, I’d recommend starting early as that’s when most buses go.

Usually, the later in the day it gets, less buses are running. Even if you don’t catch the last bus, it shouldn’t be a huge cost to get a taxi back to Ulcinj.

If you speak with your accommodation hosts, you might be able to get more information on other organized tours around Montenegro or meet friends at your hostel to all share a car rental.

7. Renting a Car

The easiest solution is to rent a car in Podgorica, so you can make your own schedule/have freedom in Ulcinj. You could drive to Lake Skadar or even Lovcen National Park.

If you want to cross the border and visit Albania on a day trip, you’ll need to make sure your rental car is allowed to cross borders, and you’ll be expected to purchase insurance to cover you while driving there.

8. There Are Even Some Nude Beaches

Yes, you heard that right! There are some nude beaches in Ulcinj, most of which are marked on Google Maps (also more along the coast up to Bar too). So make sure to check before you go so you know what you’re getting yourself into.

Speaking from experience here – I accidentally went to one when I was staying in a small village up the coast, Utjeha.

In Ulcinj, there is a local nude beach only for women called “Ladies Beach Dada”. It has sulfurous waters, a bar/cafe, and mud masks (paid), which can make for a relaxing day.

There is also a “nudist settlement” in that small river village I mentioned before, Ada Bojana. Taking advantage of this is definitely one of the more quirky things to do in Ulcinj.

9. Albanian Immersion & Friendly Locals

There is quite a lot of history surrounding the fact that Ulcinj is heavily Albanian. If you’ve visited the Balkans you know how deep and painful the history can be so I’m not going to say too much about it except what pertains to you as a traveler.

When you visit you’ll be greeted with the Albanian flag and if you listen closely, you’ll hear Albanian being spoken everywhere. Also, in Albanian, the city name is Ulqin. So if you hear two different names, that’s why – its the same place.

If you haven’t explored Albania yet, this will give you a small dose. My friend who lives there is ethnically Albanian but is Montenegrin too – she speaks both Albanian and Montenegrin.

It’s common for residents to have this dual identity. While visiting, you’ll likely get to experience Albanian hospitality.

Because of this influence, Ulcinj is a very popular vacation destination for Albanians. It’s also common for those who live in Shkoder or northern Albania in general, to come visit Ulcinj for a weekend getaway, clubbing, and to attend the music festivals.

What To Do In Ulcinj

In Ulcinj, there is history, culture, good food, outdoor activities, and relaxation by the sea. It’s also pretty low-key if you avoid the super touristy month of August or any time there are large music festivals. Here are a few cool things to do in Ulcinj while visiting.

Ulcinj Coastal Walk

If you’re a nature lover, you can’t miss this gorgeous coastal walk in Ulcinj. The walk hugs the rocky Adriatic seaside going south towards Velika Plaza and the border of Albania.

Right before the start of the walk is Higo Restaurant, which is a place I’d highly recommend because it’s an amazing place for a coffee and a view.

Velika Plaza

Velika Plaza is renowned for being the longest beach in Montenegro, stretching for approximately 13 kilometers along the Adriatic coast.

Its golden sandy shores make it an ideal destination for sunbathing and long walks. It’s also known for water sports, so if you’re into adventure travel, Ulcinj could be a great place to take advantage of this for a few days.

Ada Bojana

Ada Bojana is a unique triangular-shaped island formed by the Buna River. It is known for its nice sandy beaches and being home to some nudist beach areas. The island is famous for its seafood, and visitors can enjoy delicious fresh catches at the numerous seafood restaurants along the river.

Valdanos Bay

Valdanos Bay is a picturesque bay surrounded by ancient olive groves. You can walk through the olive trees on the way to a swimming spot. Besides natural beauty, it also holds historical significance, with remnants of some ancient structures.

Ulcinj Old Town

The Old Town is rich in history, and a visit to the Ulcinj Castle is a must. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the surrounding area.

The Balsica Tower, part of the castle complex, is a well-preserved medieval tower offering insights into the town’s past.

Wander through narrow cobblestone streets and discover historic buildings that showcase a blend of architectural styles, including influences from the Ottoman and Venetian periods.

Visit The Mosques

There are quite a few mosques in town, if you want to visit for prayers or just to see them. 

Museum of Local History

The museum provides context for the cultural history of Ulcinj. It has artifacts from various local traditions over the centuries.

Here are a few frequently asked questions that might help you with planning your trip.

Can I Get A Bus From Ulcinj To Albania?

You can get a minibus (a local who drives a van for shared transport) that goes twice a day in the summer (his schedule might be different in the off-season).

Usually, the driver leaves at 6 AM and 1 PM if I remember correctly, with limited spots available. If you want to reserve a place, you should be able to talk with your accommodation to arrange it.

Another option that many people take is to share a taxi to the border, cross by foot, and then share another taxi on the Albanian side. Some drivers wait at the border. 

How Many Days Should I Spend In Ulcinj?

If you are traveling at a slow pace, I’d recommend spending 3 days in Ulcinj to take advantage of the surrounding nature and outdoor activities. If you are on a tight schedule, you could do a day trip to Ulcinj or stay 1-2 nights. 

When is the best time to visit Ulcinj?

If you want a more chilled-out trip, I’d recommend visiting April and May for good weather and June especially if you want that summer vibe without the crowds. You can also go at the tail end of the summer season – September and early October.

I really enjoyed my short visit to Malta and would love to go back and do a longer work exchange there. If more time is spent, you can take the ferry to Gozo and experience an even more relaxed Maltese vibe.

Cyprus

Cyprus is another small Mediterranean island located south of Turkey. Similar to Malta, most people think of this as purely a vacation spot, but there is more to Cyprus than just beaches.

There is a lot of ancient history like Paphos city – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You should do also do a wine tasting and enjoy the nightlife in Limassol.

Montenegro

Montenegro is a small country located in southeastern Europe, known for its stunning beaches, rugged mountains, and picturesque old towns.

This Balkan country is well known for the Bay of Kotor – a truly incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has fjord-like landscape and a castle that you can hike up to for great views of the whole bay.

I spent one month doing a work exchange near Lake Skadar, the Balkan’s largest lake. It’s beautiful, I’d highly recommend Montenegro for a Europe work exchange.

North Macedonia

North Macedonia is a landlocked country located in the Balkans, known for being quite the mixing pot of ethnicities and languages.

The capital city, Skopje, is known for being a tad quirky with lots of statues everywhere. Lake Ohrid can’t be missed – it’s the deepest lake in the Balkans and the surrounding area is beautiful. Doing a work exchange there will be great for nature lovers.

Albania

Albania is a small Balkan country, known for the Albanian Riviera coastline, dramatic mountains, ancient ruins and the best cuisine in the region (I’m biased on that).

The northern mountains are nicknamed the Albanian Alps – one of the most popular destinations in the country. There are plenty of awesome hostels in Tirana to choose from while you experience the capital’s vibrant nightlife and visit the interesting museums.

Just south of the capital is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city of Berat – known for being the city of a thousand windows.

Since I have been living in Albania for quite a while, I can say that it’s a great place to do a work exchange and experience some Albanian hospitality.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country located in southeastern Europe, known for its stunning natural beauty, intense history, and vibrant culture.

The city of Sarajevo has both Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian architecture and makes for an excellent place to base yourself for exploring the rest of the country.

Kosovo is a small, landlocked country located in the Balkans. It’s well known for the beautiful mountains but mostly for being a very new country with a lot of recent conflicts.

The city of Pristina is small but interesting, you can see some traditional houses but also some new and ‘ugly’ architecture. The country is also home to many natural wonders, such as the Rugova Canyon and the Mirusha Waterfalls.

Slovenia

Slovenia is a small country in Central Europe. For a long time, it was overlooked but many travelers are visiting for the beautiful landscapes and great food. Ljubljana is the capital city and it’s famous bridges and architecture.

Besides general cleaning, you would be helping with sorting and cleaning bottles and learning how to do laser engraving and ceramic decals.

The factory owner, Matt, needs help with promotion/marketing, especially social media too.

He would like 30 hours of help per week in exchange for some meals and a private room with a queen bed.

The bathroom is large with a Jacuzzi tub, and a walk-in shower and is shared with another person. Matt also can pick you up and drop you off at the airport when needed.

#2 Learn About Vegan & Organic Gardening

Are you interested in learning more about veganism? This work exchange in Hawaii is located in the beautiful area of North Kohala on Big Island.

You would be helping a vegan, nonprofit, educational organization with organic gardening.

The organization focuses on helping people learn how to grow their own vegetables and cook vegan food (yay for free cooking classes!).

They require 30 hours per week and accept helpers from April to December.

#3 Help A Honey Bee Sanctuary

Do you want to learn more about bees? This Maui work exchange is a honey bee sanctuary with a farm/homestead and a gift shop located near the small town of Ulupalakua.

It is located in the ‘upcountry’ area of Maui so there are killer ocean views and beautiful sunsets, plus it’s close to the only winery on the island.

The bee sanctuary sits at 2,000 feet elevation on Haleakala with great weather to enjoy since it’s on the drier side of Maui – less rain and mosquitos!

The sanctuary is still in the early stages, so there are projects that need to be developed, like expanding the apiary.

They are also building an observation beehive because they focus on the public’s education of how important bees are/why we need to protect them.

Here are some of the duties to help with:

• Herb & Flower Garden – beautification for visitors, creates new sources for bees
• Gift Shop – selling products and interacting with the public
• Road stand – shaved ice and food for locals and tourists
• Online Promotion – helping with social media, the website, and the online store

• Food Gardens – caring for the vegetable beds
• Beekeeping – helping with the honeybees and harvesting honey
• Learning how to make products – make products that we sell such as lotion bars, candles, lip balms, jewelry, and any other crafts that we can think of to contribute to our road stand

She would like 25 hours a week, and in exchange, you get your own private room while the rest of the house is shared. She can also do airport pick-ups if necessary.

#5 Help At A Small Inn

If you’re a woman looking to do a gap year in Hawaii, then this opportunity is for you.

This long-term work exchange in Hawaii is a 1-year minimum commitment for a small bed and breakfast.

This inn is close to the ocean, located on the Big Island, near the town of Captain Cook. Nicole, the founder, is looking for a single woman that is retired or can work from home.​​

It would be a bonus to have previous computer, cleaning, cooking, spa services, business administration, or retreat planning experience.

Nicole would like 25 hours of help per week in exchange for a private room with access to the shared bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room and use of the swimming pool, hot tub, and sauna.

There is also the possibility of extra income and/or car usage for extra hours and both airport and bus station pick-up is offered.

This work exchange in Hawaii is on a small 4-acre farm in Hawaii Kai near Honolulu on the island of Oahu. It has been owned by the same family for the last 40 years.

The host, Karian, grew up on the farm, learning how to live off-grid/sustainably in case supplies aren’t able to reach the island.

He strives to share that same sustainability with visitors so they can understand island life, and get to know the rich cultural heritage of Ohau.

The minimum stay is 3 weeks and the maximum is 2 months.

Most people assume that ‘slow travel’ means you need a long amount of time to do it, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. 

Yes, slow traveling does often mean staying in on places for a longer period, but it also means you could be doing a slow journey to a destination by alternatives to ferries like trains, ferries, busses, etc. 

Above all else, slow travel is more of a mindset.

Whether you have months to explore the Albanian Riviera or just a weekend break in Albania’s capital, Tirana, you can apply the slow travel mindset to your journey.

7 Reasons To Explore Albania By Slow Traveling

A lot of Albania’s characteristics as a country really align with the mindset of slow traveling. I don’t think many people know that though, but I want them to. 

Let’s get into 7 reasons why you should explore Albania through slow travel.

1. It’s Very Affordable

One of the main attractions for travelers is that Albania is a very affordable destination. 

It’s easy to find information online about traveling to Albania and how the cost of living makes it the perfect place for budget travelers, especially as a country on the European continent. 

While travel is cheap, prices do inflate in the summer since that is how locals make their income for the entire year. 

Even with summer inflation, if someone is coming from a Western country, the prices are still very affordable – at least for now, Albania is becoming quite popular!

If you come during the offseason, not only is the weather is still great (though it can be pretty rainy/snowy in the mountains) prices are even lower. 

Also, Albania kind of works off of who you know, so the longer you stay and the more connections you make, the more likely it will be cheaper (example: when you rent an apartment for longer so you pay less rent per month).

2. Americans Can Stay For 1 Year Without A Visa

There’s great news for you if you have a US passport because you can enter Albania without issue and stay for up to 1 year. 

You literally don’t have to do anything to activate this visa-free year besides going through the regular immigration when you arrive via plane, bus, ferry, etc.

This is how I’m staying in Albania, and how many others are as well. Because of this, the large majority of foreigners here tend to be from the US.

Plus, if you want to stay longer than 1 year, it’s a pretty simple and cheap process to apply for a 5-year residence permit. 

If you don’t want to deal with paperwork at all, you can always leave Albania for 3 months to reset your time and re-enter for another visa-free year.

This is perfect because even if you don’t plan to stay for a whole year, you can slow travel around Albania without any worries of time restraints in the back of your mind.

Not too worry though, many other countries get a 3-month tourist visa on arrival, which is still plenty of time to get into the fabric of what really makes Albania tick.

3. Slow Living Is Normal

If you’ve traveled a bit, you probably know that many non-western countries live life a little bit slower and that it’s just something you need to adjust to. 

We are so used to a fast-paced lifestyle that it can feel very foreign to see people prefer to do things slowly – but sometimes, that is exactly what you need!

Because of this, slow travel and exploring Albania go together like bread and butter. If you try to travel fast in Albania, it probably wouldn’t work out too well. 

There’s a lot of reasons that go into this like Albania’s history with communism, a general relaxed culture that matches other Meditteranean countries, etc.

As an example, private car ownership was banned until the early 1990s when communism fell. That is when the first highway was built. 

So it’s only been 40 years for road development, whereas other countries have been updating their transport networks for hundreds of years.

4. There’s More Bio-Diversity Than You Think

While some might see Albania solely as a great Meditteranaean beach destination, there’s a lot more than meets the eye. 

For example, did you know that Albania has 6 different climates? There’s Hot Mediterranean, Warm Mediterranean, Subtropical, Oceanic, Continental, and Subarctic climates. 

This means you can go to beaches with some of the clearest water in Europe and hike in mountains so stunning that they have been nicknamed the ‘Albanian Alps’ or Accursed Mountains. Hiking in Albania is one of the best ways to see the country.

Don’t even get me started on the gorgeous lakes, bubbling freshwater springs, hidden canyons, and waterfalls, etc. You could a lot many months to explore Albania and still not see the whole country. 

Slow traveling in Albania is perfect because yes there are many places that bloggers have written about, but there are still so much more that remains hidden. The only realistic way to find those places is because you’re taking your time.

5. Friendly Locals Make You Want To Stay Longer

Many travelers have come to Albania expecting to stay for a short time before moving on, then find themselves sticking around for months! 

If you’re wondering why that is, well the locals are so amazing.

Albanians have a strong streak of hospitality that runs deeply in their culture. If you’re from a Western country and you’re a frequent traveler, you might be familiar with being very guarded when you travel because of things like travel scams. 

They are some of the nicest and most authentic people I’ve met in all of my travels. 

When I first got here, it was hard for me to trust such genuine and innocent hospitality. And as a woman, I feel like I need to have my guard up even more when traveling, but not the case in Albania.

Of course, I’m sure Albania is not immune from the likes of travel scams, but I have found that 95% of the time, people don’t have an agenda. 

With that being said, they are oftentimes brutally honest with you, so don’t be offended if you are surprised by their directness!

6. Explore Albania’s Food

Albania has two major food groups and they are based on geography since the cuisine is highly dependent on what you can grow or source nearby. 

Generally, all Albanian food strongly emphasizes local vegetables, cheese, and meat, but the mountainous regions even more so. 

If you’re further inland, especially in the mountains, you can expect the cuisine to be very hearty.

Whereas, along the Albanian coast, food will heavily be based on seafood and Greek and Italian cuisine. 

This is because Albania is right above Greece and since Italy is right across the Adriatic sea.

Albania’s food is similar to what you can typically find in the whole Balkan region, but many dishes are made differently compared to the other Balkan countries and also some dishes that completely unique to Albania.

Some amazing dishes are localized to a region or town (kind of like in Italy). So don’t be surprised if you hear someone say, “Oh you have to go to [insert town] to try [insert local dish]”. 

It’s possible to sample traditional Albanian cuisine on a short trip, but if you want to really delve into it, it’s best to spend more time since there is a lot to taste!

A lot of people adopt a slow travel mindset because they’ve already spent time doing what is considered ‘normal travel’ before realizing that they weren’t getting much out of it. 

So they decided to slow down a bit to let their surroundings soak in. 

For me, I find it easy to do this when I stumble upon hidden travel gems. As we talked about earlier, it’s very easy to find those in Albania. 

There are so many beautiful places where it’s peaceful and serene.

This opens up the opportunity to be alone with your thoughts to reflect or meditate, practice yoga, draw or paint the landscape, etc. 

The possibilities for finding solitude are endless!

If you’ve ever been to popular tourist sites in Europe, you might have seen firsthand the overwhelming display of over-tourism. 

I’m talking about swarms of tourists that often degrade ancient historical sites, inadvertently destroy the local economy, ruin precious natural environments, etc. 

It might feel almost impossible to get off the beaten tourist path in Europe, but it isn’t, I promise! There are still destinations that are great for slow traveling!

Here are 8 amazing slow travel destinations.

1. Albania

One of my favorite places to slow travel in is Albania! Nicknamed the ‘Land of Eagles, this country is a unique blend of Europe, the Middle East, and Mediterranean vibes. 

Its location means that there are a wide variety of places to explore, like beaches with crystal clear, turquoise water, or mountains so beautiful that they are called the ‘Albanian Alps’.

It’s almost like Albania is made for slow travel. It’s very affordable and you can find some of the cheapest accommodation in all of Europe. Check out accommodation in Albania.

Life moves a bit slower for Albanians.

Due to the general atmosphere of slow living, plus the fact that the country’s infrastructure isn’t the best, it’s a bit ridiculous to assume you’ll be able to speed through the country and find all the best Instagram spots.

It’s best to accept the slow pace of life instead of fighting it. Embrace the laid-back mentality, it will do wonders for relieving stress!

PS if you’re American, you can stay in Albania for up to 1 year without a visa! And if you fall in love with Albania (like I have) you can leave for 3 months to get another visa-free year.

2. Georgia

You might be wondering why there’s a US state on the list – well it’s not a state, but a country in the Caucasus region. 

It’s located at the intersection where Europe meets Asia, so it’s going to be very different from what is typically thought of as Europe, like Spain, France, Italy, etc.

Previously, it was a Soviet republic, but there’s also plenty of other histories that go back thousands of years that you have to learn about! 

Georgia has plenty of slow travel experiences, like exploring cave monasteries, learning ancient techniques to make wine, lounging on beautiful Black Sea beaches, discovering quaint mountain villages, etc.

Similar to Albania, Georgia isn’t very developed so it’s harder to get around quickly. You should expect a slow pace of life with very friendly locals and delicious cuisine. 

Take your time exploring ancient wine practices (sampling as you go is highly suggested), hiking in the stunning mountains, and getting lost in the cobblestone lanes of Tiblisi (the capital of Georgia).

PS 93 countries can stay in Georgia for up to 1 year without a visa, which makes it a wonderful place to take your time when visiting. 

If you don’t have a passport from one of those 93 countries, you can apply for Georgia’s digital nomad visa. There’s no fee, but you do have to prove you make at least $2,000 (USD) per month.

3. Italy

There’s no need for an introduction to this famous European country since its reputation is known worldwide. 

Italy is on the top of people’s bucket list and for many good reasons like the food, wine, architecture, history, etc.!

Though many famous tourist sites are constantly flooded with tourists, there is still a quiet side to Italy that many have yet to discover. 

These are the places that actually want foreigners to come so that their towns and regions to be revitalized.

These little Italian towns are trying to breathe life back into their local economies by luring remote workers to come to live there.

They are offering incentives like 50% rent reduction, thousands of Euros to start a local business in the tourism industry, and even €1,500 for every newborn child.

Italy is a great slow travel destination simply because there is so much to see that it can be overwhelming. You could probably spend years there and still not see everything.

It’s so much better to take your time to really enjoy the Italian lifestyle to the fullest. 

The cost of living in Italy is higher than in some other places on this list, but it’s possible to find affordable accommodation in Italy.

4. Malta

Located close to Italy, this archipelago in the central Mediterranean Sea. If you’re looking for a slow travel destination that has the sun, sea, great food, and ancient history, then Malta is perfect!

Malta has friendly locals, great public transport, and plenty of places to explore. It’s not as widely known compared to other European beach destinations and has a lower cost of living compared to Italy.

Don’t let that fool you though, there’s plenty of great food to try, friendly locals, and beautiful natural sights. It is completely safe and totally worth slow traveling in!

Many don’t realize that Ireland and Northern Ireland are separate countries. Northern Ireland is in the United Kingdom, so you might be able to stay visa-free for up to 6 months!

Though Poland is growing in popularity among travelers, it’s very much still an underrated place that is begging to be your next slow travel destination.

If you’re interested in exploring cobblestone streets, colorful town squares, beautiful forests, stunning mountains, then Poland is great for you to slow travel. 

It has a wide variety of things to do in nature and in the cities. There are many different foods to try depending on the region too. 

Unlike some of the countries on our list, the country is well connected with good public transport that also happens to be pretty cheap – the best of both worlds!

Poland’s cost of living makes staying for longer periods still doable too. Plus, the accommodation in Poland is great quality while still being very affordable. You definitely get a lot of ‘bang for your buck’!

Lastly, this Baltic country has a lot to offer even though it’s pretty small geographically speaking. Estonia has only three large cities, so it’s mostly a natural landscape which is great for outdoor enthusiasts!

Estonia has 2,222 islands and islets – how cool is that? It is known for being one of the least crowded countries in Europe. 

If you’re thinking of slow traveling in Estonia, consider cycling to enjoy the small villages and beautiful natural landscape.
